Seems like there are two broad goals for an aquascape: make it a work of art (think Amano for SW) or make it look like a slice of the reef. I always go for the latter ..... and even occasionally succeed. Not a particularly big fan of the former.
I'm sort of divided I *think*, but it also depends on where in my home the tank will be in. You have given me thoughts to ponder as I set up multiple nanos (were all previously s/water) and newly purchased tanks. I am playing musical rocks with my dry rock placement.

So this is my thoughts on aquascaping my 56 gallon column. I didn’t go very tall simply because I wanted to give plenty of room for things to grown up, plus this will give me the option of possibly attaching something to that back wall to create a floating island of sorts. Any thoughts?

The "ring" seems out of place. Perhaps lay it at an angle with one side perched on the rock, other side in the sand? If you are planning gobies, or blennies, they will looooove that as a home/peep perch/lookout.

Besides that I like it.
