Shallow tanks really are the way to go, atleast IMO. If you're a stick head, maybe not soo much but for LPS/Softy/NEM tanks, you can't beat them.
I like the best of both worlds...

This was actually my original plan with my custom tank but the cost of it was... well... scary.

Custom dropoffs are expensive.

Imagine what something like this costs...

I can Imagine quite vividly, I had a quote for a 6 foot glass peninsula style drop off and yeah, not cheap.

Good morning! Mommy says we are in charge of peer pressure while she's at work.

I like what you got much better. I guess I have just never seen the point of the drop offs. Seems like more opportunity for structural failure. Just me, I guess. I am the curmudgeon here. LOL!

Sunrise on Pirate’s Reef. There are a few softies in here. And the snails that never venture out from under the overflow. It is REALLY clean under there. Still no fish yet.

Really the reason I wanted the drop off is because I wanted a garden eel garden to be the centerpiece of the drop off portion with a rock shelf overhanging and I was going to go really shallow on the upper level somewhere in the 12-14" range. But I am very happy with what I decided on, I would have loved a 6' tank but it just wouldn't work in our space and i wasn't putting it in the basement much to my wife's dismay.

More Pirate’s Reef spam... I know it is nothing special. But it is a beginning of coming to life again.

It's the start of something beautiful.
