Purposely no pictures and general observations. Very aware that the more specific I would get the more some would consider it a challenge to dispute them. I am not here to advocate for or against. Just stating my thoughts.

Not a challenge. By me at least. I see the method as one of many hobbyist can choose from. Up to them. It was just a question. Me personally I probably would have at least attempted but then again I'm not the most scientific or detail oriented person...

No worry - just a question nothing more.

2. Increased coral growth: Purely anecdotal response is that yes there does appear to be substantially increased coral growth and coloration as described by Mike Paletta. Obviously, it is difficult to know how much of this is due to increased PAR, change in lighting schedule, FM supplied ingredients or combination of all the above. Best guess is that it is likely most or even all is due to the lighting intensity increase of almost 50%.

Par increase? You mean by lighting schedule change?

I don’t think anyone doubts that increased lighting can increase coral growth and pH.

Yes. If I had it to do all over again I would start with the lights only. I am somewhat surprised that a 50% increase in intensity from what ATI considered appropriate for SPS, has had no observable negative effect on corals.

And i got a shock after calibration - I was nearly 0.2 wrong before - When I read 8.14 before its read 7.95 now. It means that I normally swing between 7.8 and 8.1 before - I will run for a week or two if nothing happens

Sincerely Lasse
I need calibrate because I’m high up in ph but it could be possible as my tank is in the condo garage so door opens a few times a day and always fresh air and no one hangs there besides me.

Doug on Frag Garage. I've commented on the vid about the apparent problem regarding the alkalinity calculator, perhaps I'll get a reply.

Listened to it yesterday, and if I'm honest, it was hard to keep listening. I feel like FM and those aligned with the brand are only ever trying to tell reefers that methods which have worked for decades are a bad idea and the only solution is to buy their products.

Curious why Paletta appears to be endorsing this method.

Since the method involves several aspects, liking it may be a consequence of only one or some of the aspects, and not all. Too bad it has a name focusing people on only one part which may not actually be the beneficial part.

I am using it and find that most of what they, and MP, say will happen, is accurate. To Randy's point, there is no way to know, other than with extensive experimentation, if it is anything other than the change in lighting. However as little as it costs to use it I don't see any reason not to.

Doug reckons RTN is caused by the coral skeleton dissolving, so perhaps you won't have that happen either. Are you measuring improvement through calcium consumption versus Alkalinity as suggested by Doug? I think he said Alk consumption was less reliable as an indicator.

At the standard hobbyist level isnt alk easier/more accurate to measure than calcium? I have 3 ways to measure alk and all 3 line up for me (if I do them properly). Calcium I have 2 tests and neither ever line up I get a range and I am happy in that knowledge, but to base the health of my system off that?

How can it be less reliable? Any dissolution of skeleton must release both alk and calcium in a fixed ratio.

Because he flip flops methods and promotes whichever one he is running at the time
But is it financially motivated or just wanting to find perfection? Known of him for decades. Probably since FAMA. Has never come across as being financially motivated but then perhaps I misread him.

Here's the timestamp where he talks about it if you're interested. Seems easier than me trying to TLDR; it.

Thanks. Listened to it. Overall, it seems to contain incorrect assertions about what produces acid and how that might deplete alk. I don’t buy the argument at all, as long as nitrate is reasonably stable and not being dosed.

The bromine discussion seems quite off the wall as well.

I'm listening to this, and I have to believe my english understanding is very very bad, because this Doug guy have to be talking about magic in a reefing podcast...
