What is everyone’s thoughts on leaving the full syphon drain wide open vs using a “upside down u”?

The way my overflow box is would call for 2 different plumbing techniques due to the size of the 1 1/2in pvc for the drains. I’ve only used the “u’s” in the past but have read some leave it wide open.

Leaving it open would allow for easier plumbing, but I can fit 2 “u’s” with the emergency drain if that’s the best option.

Any help or comments are appreciated

It all depends on the water depth above it, the size of the box and the flow rate. The open top pipe is fine as long as it does not create a vortex and draw in air. If it creates a vortex and draws in air, then it will both gurgle and if string enough cause oscillation as flow slows and then rebounds as the vortex breaks and forms.

plumbing box- 20" x 4.25" x 8.25" tall

Not looking to run heavy amounts of flow through the box, just need it to move water from sump to display. Have plenty of power heads to create desired flow for tank.
