I'm not sure what gruni9n is but that's cool. I doubt this little guy will make it but I will try.
Ground onion.... just kidding but baby brine and again rotifiers are best first foods

Grunion are fish that spawn during the high tide on the full and new moon and lay their eggs in the sand. Ten days later when the highest tides come back they hatch in the action of the waves. The next morning after the spawning, eggs cover the sand (these eggs will not make it and will be food for birds etc.)

24 hours later and he still going. First batch of baby brine hatched. Dropping crushed hatchery pellets and baby brine in every 4 hours or so. We'll see how it goes
I think he has a pretty good chance. 1. He is already a week old 2. one the issues ppl have raising fry is ammonia and since he is living in an established tank, that is not your worry. 3. you can visually see him eating. So I think you and him should be fine.

Maybe get him out and put him in a breeder box for protection and try to raise him that way? Thats how Im raising my baby saltwater mollies

I think that might limit whatever is keeping him alive.
It hasn't be me up tobthis point. I haven't looked in my return chamber in like 7 months and there is a alot of critters moving around in there of all different sizes. I'm assuming it's that keeping him alive.

Ya he is def eating stuff I am putting in there. My real concern is he might get sucked into return pump intake.

I would be worried that it will get sucked up into the return pump. I'd get it out of there.

Something FW guys learned long ago being muck has life. All that mulm is inert yet amongst it lives the beginning of the food chain. Outside of aesthetics there's no valid reason to clean sumps and perhaps best left alone so that smaller can flourish. In essence a refugium for that which wouldn't last long in the main display.

Perhaps placing a light behind the weir of the overflow would attract future hatches and some might make it past the socks and skimmer long enough to feast on that which grows on the mulm. Better yet. Have the overflow feed directly into a refugium with foam separation before the skimmer box. Promote the smallest pods as I know a breeder who feeds that vs rotifers and encourages survival of the largest fry. Only one way to find out. Just do it.

I think u might be on to something here. I have never vacuumednor touched thos chamber and it is full of what you call mulm. All kinds of critters crawling around in here although it generally gets no light. Possible that my algae scrubber is putting out plankton type spores he is eating. I really don't know but his gut seems to be pretty fat for something I have never fed until a day ago

Also I got another brood about to pop. She basically laid eggs right after the last one hatched a week ago. Son will be interesting to see what happens. I have seen my molly popping hers out and as soon as they swim out of her the hawkfish has at em. Almost like he knows she is giving birth and perches right next to her. The babys in my tank have no shot.

Some pods eat detritus and their first hatched might be small enough to feed freshly hatched clowns and as you mentioned, life within an algae scrubber might be flowing nutrients too. Sometimes sterilization not the best choice. I'm trying to avoid it within reason for these specific reasons.

Clowns seek light at hatching. Place a light behind the weir and help those that escape predation a chance to join last batch survivor my thought process.

There's a trap based on using a light to capture clown fish fry. Makes sense.

I think this is super cool and I am following along to see what happens! You def gotta figure out a way to keep him out of the return pump though! Maybe a sponge wrapped around the intake? Or some bridal netting maybe?

If in the future you decide to try setting up a brood system and want some advice on what has and hasn't worked for me feel free to PM me. I can link you to many useful threads and some resources for supplies. I am by no means an expert, but currently have clownfish fry (50 total) at day 70 something and cardinalfish babies at day 3 (42 total). I have had success with both species in the past, and i am also working on springeri damsels and freidmani psuedochromis but having a hard time sourcing a pure strain of S-type rotifers.

Bridal netting is awesome to have around. I used to keep it around and use it when fragging shrooms onto new rocks. Some bridal netting and an elastic wrapped around the rock until the shroom frags take to the rock works awesome. Easy to cut to size of anything you need, including making your own socks for carbon or whatever...

Ok putting soc on didnt go well. Couldn't get it on with pump in so decided to take it out but had to turn off. Once water got high he started swimming all over sump which isn't good cuz I got pumps and mess all over in there. He actually swam back to last compartment so had to kick pump back on right quick. So I'll just leave him be. He doesn't seem to go near cage where intake is. Maybe it scares him I don't know. It's just a wait and hope at this point
