So basically, if you buy a large colony, the insurer will keep a frag of said colony. They can grow the frag out, sell a few pieces of it, etc. Basically, if your coral dies due to a tank failure, blackout, etc, you still have a piece of that colony. This could probably be implemented at the LFS level so you don't have to ship a piece of your colony across the country and risk it dying.

You’d be talking about the Reefers Code, which was popular 30 years ago but has since gone away with the advent of chop shop and other modern businesses that provide coral to the hobbyists.

Is it odd to miss reefkeeping culture from 20-30 years ago even though I wasn't around for that era?

Still do this with a couple of reefers here in uk if we get anything that’s expensive or rare or just stunning

My local friends and I do something similar. We give/trade each other backup frags of corals so that if something goes wrong, someone else has a backup piece available.

Our local reef club has basically what you described. “DBTC” stands for “Don’t Break the Chain”. Basically someone offers frags from their colony to other members, then once their frag grows they frag it and and pass it, then the cycle continues. If the creator or anyone up the chain loses their coral, they can request a frag from the same line and at that point multiple people should have it

Could do something like that here with like the thermos swap? Go 4 or 5 ways so there's a couple floating around.

This is what we do at our farm. We keep mother colonies of all pieces shipped (at the moment, we only do wholesale but that's changing in the next few months). We also keep several separate systems and at two separate locations, just in case SHTF for some reason.

As many have said, those of us that have been in the hobby forever remember a time that this was a regular thing amongst everyone. We have colonies that are 20-30 years old and are still going stronger than ever. Anytime we get a new wild specimen in (and we're always on the lookout for new [and old, but new to us] pieces), we frag it and grow out several colonies before it ever makes it to our LFS customers as an aquacultured piece. The process can take many months, if not year(s), but having the genetic bank has been priceless for us as it's saved the company several times.
