There's always something new... My McCosker has a fat lip. What's the deal?

Is this a parasite of some sort or bacterial infection? He's starting to look like he has a beard. What's the best way to treat within the display tank?

You'd be best served to start a thread in the disease forum: https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/fish-disease-treatment-and-diagnosis.771/
Better experts than I over there. It's pretty rare anything can be treated in a DT, though.

That thread is dead. I'm not getting any help over there. Not a single reply from any "expert", just a reply from someone who thought maybe it was just physical damage. Has anyone here experienced something similar with their wrasses (or fish in general)?

The worst thing to do when you suspect infection is fail to diagnose quickly, so I'm starting to get nervous.

Here is the thread I started on that forum.

Ngoodermuth is quite "expert" in disease treatment and diagnosis. In fact, she's one of the best on the site for it.

Thanks. That's good to know. That's my mistake.

When the response focused on physical damage rather than potential disease causes and treatment, it looked more "helpful hobbyist" than "disease expert" to me. And just like all medical issues, I was hoping for 2nd and 3rd opinions as well.

I'll follow up further with her as I try to clear this ailment up.

I sent you over that way because I don't really know what I'm looking at here. Sorry. I'd rather have more seasoned eyes take a look than offer my own guesses.

So you're saying it's unreasonable to expect you to know everything? :)

I am new to wrasses and I have been reading about compatibility. I would like to buy a reef safe wrasse to go along with a male McCosker wrasse (Paracheilinus mccoskeri). Looking for best chances of flashing and compatibility. What are some good male wrasses to house with a McCosker? Will a Red Head Solon work? Another Paracheilinus but of different species? Any of the Cirrhilabrus species. Trying to keep the cost of each fish below $100.

I also have other fish: tangs, clowns, niger trigger, azure damsels etc.

Thanks!

I actually have fish with the same problem. It is likely injury with possible secondary infection. It does not really affect their eating habit and it will heal. In my case, it cause erosion of the lip and cause the wrasse to have an abnormal looking mouth but did not affect his ability to eat. Resulting in a normal fat wrasse with slightly abnormal mouth.

I am getting a golden rhomboidalis tomorrow for my 180g DT. I will put it through QT and then use an acclimation box in the DT.

However do you think I will have any problem with aggression from my current wrasse?

Currently I have:
Labbouts wrasse (which I assume would show the most aggression)
Leopard wrasse
Yellow Wrasse
Yellowfin Flasher
Mccosker flasher
Carpenters flasher
Cleaner wrasse

The labouti will be the most likely to harass, but the acclimation box will help.

Recommend anything besides the acclimation box? Also, should I put PVC in there or no so he is out the entire time?
You can put something in there, but it needs to leave him visible to the other wrasses.

alright I will just put one small piece of PVC in there. Anything else I can do? Maybe just feed the top of the acclimation box so when he is eating the other wrasse see him for sure?

I do like to use a piece of PVC as well. As far as feeding, yes - you can do that and a good idea. I try to put the box in a place where I can feed upstream or near the box, knowing that some food will get blown in.

Good luck Alton. He (and the Flame Fairy too) is such a beautiful wrasse. Hope they settle down for you.

Did you use acclimation box or just put him in?

Also is it constant chasing and the flame is hiding or is it just random chase?
