It is actually something for algae. It'll bring your nitrates up to reasonable

I started my reef with 90% dry rock, so my system had been undetectable phos and nitrate for so long. So long I actually dosed it for a while. My original dry rocks are now 3 years old and just now at the point of showing 5ppm nitrate and .10 phos. Took a long time to get there. Corals are doing fantastic now.
