Hard to tell what that is from the pics what that is for sure. Is it just on the algae? Also, what's the flow like in your tank? What powerheads are you using? What did you see in the microscope - tiny sticks?

Longer sticks with cells in a row indicate cyanobacteria. Can you see any cells with thicker cell walls - if not its probably the ones that form mats.

Cool setup! Fellow Lagoon 25 reefer here...following! I know you were asking about the heater placement, I put mine in the second chamber from the left. Fits great.
I ended up putting mine inside return pump section. Heater controller probe in the second from right.
These are neat tanks. I like how easy water changes are compared to my old set ups (70 and a 125 gallon).
