Greetings R2R,

I am officially making a return to the salty side. After checking out Saltwateraquarium.com yesterday to get a heater for my 20 long Aqueon tank from petco I checked out the cleanse section like I always do and bam I saw my tank. $79 new “open box” IM 15 cube and you bet I snagged that so fast then sold my 20 long last night. Some might say I should have kept the 20 long due to surface area and space, but living in an apartment makes the 30” of space prime releastate. The IM 15 is a better fit for me tbh, the cube is nice and being an all in one is perfect for me to have. I also already own one that is a freshwater tank too.

This was my old tank I used to have in college which was only 7 gallons and used KP Aquatics base rock. I want to try and make something similar with just a larger footprint and an added bonus of getting Tampa Bay Saltwater rock and sand!

Other than that I really want to focus on natural filtration and biodiversity while still keeping it realistic and natural looking. By this I mean I want a diverse community of inverts but less species diversity in corals and macroalgae. Many of the dive videos and pictures I’ve seen show many areas with under 6 coral species in a 15” x 15” area and usually only a species or two of macroalgae. I hope to replicate this by only having maybe 2-3 soft coral species and potentially a singular showpiece photosynthetic gorgonian. I also plan to keep a single macroalgae as the dominant species with whatever else shows up on the rock. Invertebrate diversity wise I want a decent amount of micro snail species that stay under 1” and I’m hoping to get the following maybe in small numbers but maybe I stick to a couple of these species:
Strombus maculatus (nano conch)
Stomatella
Dwarf marginella
Dwarf planaxis
Dwarf cerith
Zig zag periwinkles
Black ribbed/dwarf limpet
Collostian snails
Dwarf chitons
Mini brittle stars
Pods
Mysid shrimp

All of these combined would probably equal the same bioload as having:
2 regular nassarius (nano conch/marginella)
3 astrea/trochus (collostian/marginella/stomatella/dwarf limpet)
2-3 regular sized cerith (periwinkles/planaxis/dwarf cerith)

8 snails in a 15 gallon to me seems fair, maybe a bit high but again these all max under 1” adult size with most staying under .75” full grown. I am also thinking of trying to obtain a few more invertebtrate species such as a cluster colony, some other larger dusters, Caribbean porcelain crabs and maybe just maybe a couple flat tree oysters.

Coral wise as stated above I want to keep simpler like a toadstool, maybe some Kenya tree or similar finger type leather, a single showpiece photosynthetic gorgonian and maybe some palys/zoas if I’m feeling up for it. My thing with zoas is I want the natural varieties not anything designer. I’m all for natural and wild type colorations in my tanks. Macroalgae wise it will either be a caulerpa or red grape I think or coralline clusters because those have also been cool to me.

Moving on to fish which I actully already have one of the fish I’m putting in the tank. A small 4-stripe damsel that lives in the sump of my friend’s Red Sea 120. Besides that I was leaning towards a Tailspot blenny or small goby species. Again, this I want to keep simple, not too many fish live in 15” x 15” spaces from all I’ve seen. Usually it’s a big school over a reef section but I’m limited so a single damsel and maybe a rock dwelling creature will suffice.

That’s all for now I think livestock related. Hardware and equipment wise I have the following:
Duetto ATO
Inkbird temp controller
HMA-100 heater (coming)
IM 15 cube (coming)
Stand (needs some TLC which will be the 1st little bit of the thread)

Looking to get a wavemaker at some point and the Hygger 60w mini gyre or their mini wavemaker. Thought about a Nero 3 but I think a gyre could be nice for the gorgonian and softies to help with shedding. I also saw that TBS rock/sand appreciate a bit higher flow which the gyre could accommodate. Upgrading the pump is also on my radar to the pro version DC pump down the line if I feel I need it. Also filtration is just going to be live rubble in the back, the live rock, live sand, macroalgae, and good ole water changes.

My big question is lighting. I would LOVE a Kessil a80 but I feel it does not have the cover for the tank. I really love shimmer as it just adds to the natural look. Was also thinking about an Asta led which is the Amazon version of Kessil a-160 or an AI Prime.

That’s all for now, I’ll update as much as I can!

Good luck on your build! I have two IM15s so "IM" a fan. Yeah, that was dumb.

I run Noopsyche K7 V3 Pros on my IM15s, and there's a lot of good feedback on the K7 Mini. Nicrew is another good option to look at. Having owned AI Primes, I would pass on those.

I was thinking of getting one of these Lommie Pixie 30s. Used to have some back in the day and they were really nice lights. Good spread and programmable spectrum wise. If I need a 2nd one $70 isn’t bad either.

Project stand overhaul has begun, I got this free stand from Facebook and it will be a perfect for the IM 15.
IMG_8754.jpeg

First off I removed the curved “accent” pieces and got new door handles because those did not match anything in the house. The handles are a nice black that will tie it into all the other furniture we have. The plan is to make everything black except the top, middle shelf, and doors will be contact papered a dark brown wood look. I also got a 1’ x 2’ to replace the curved horizontal wood caps and to give the top/middle shelf more supports.

Next was sanding of all the pieces after deconstruction. The stand had a nailed in poly board on the back that will be removed to make cord management easier as well as allow air flow with the ATO down there. The top seemed to have some sort of clear coat that refused to come off so that’s why it will get contact papered and maybe I will seal that as well with some rust oleum matte coating.

Next up was layers of rust oleum satin enamel black paint on all the sides and edges. I think it turned out great. Pics are when it was still drying so it looks spotty. After they all dried we hit them with some matte clear coat and it’s just a waiting game for the contact paper to show up from an amazing tomorrow.

Aside from all of that my tank should be here sometime next week. I still need to order the light and wavemaker which I think I’ve decided on getting a Pixie 20 LED as it can have 4 color channels programmed and a Hygger mini gyre because I feel like the tank would appreciate more true wave like motions with the ocean rock/sand and softies.

That’s all for now, minus scanning KPAquatics and looking to get some blennies for the tank. Would LOVE a rhino blenny again but the roughhead and Rosie blennies are both tempting as well. We will see what happens there!

Currently waiting to get a stand from amazon to fit both this tank and my GFs freshwater tank. I am also in the process of reviving a new petcos aquatics department to get a temp job before I find a permanent full time gig in my college degree field. Should find out today if I got the job or not.

Aside from all the I am looking more into my livestock and would like to have three total fish in the tank. Currently I have a baby 4-stripe damsel and want to add a blenny with the hopes of a Pictus but I can also get behind a Linear or Tailspot. The 3rd fish is up in the air anything from an ORA elongate dottyback, a shrimp goby species & pistol, or maybe like a possum wrasse/ORA whitespotted Pygmy filefish. I’ll likely end up with the shrimp goby or dottyback just due ease of feeding.

Lastly I was thinking of getting like a spotted or Peterson’s anemone shrimp as a nice display species of shrimp that stays a bit smaller. Would love a blue coral banded but I’ve heard mixed things about them.

Got an email from TBS that due to storm damage they are holding off shipping while they also move and upgrade their warehouse! Sad that the storm took out the operation temporarily but I’m glad everyone is okay over there from the sounds of it. This means that the tank won’t be getting rock until at least November. Which works for me as it’ll give me more time to plan things out

Well I had a spare Fluval spec V, Duetto ATO, Inkbird controller, Finnex HMA-50, InTank media basket loaded with Matrix, some sump rock, 1 gallon cube as a reservoir, 5lbs of live sand, and 5 gallons of mature tank water at my disposal. Only seemed fitting to move the 4-stripe damsel into a “display” tank.

Cords galore:

Really just wanted to get a tank up and doing before my TBS stuff shows up in a month or so. I will say the stark white sand is not my favorite and I’m looking forward to true ocean sand. Would love to get some harder to find stuff or limited availability stuff preset in here too but we will see.

went to Petco around me to get crickets for the reptiles but almost left with this zoa. It’s not actaully that bad for $25
IMG_8965.jpeg

They also had a lot more corals, some clams and even a few Yasha gobies in stock too. Interesting little bit of window shopping.

Was digging thorough old build threads and found tons of scape inspiration:

Very much like a Boomie style reef for me. Fish wise a yellow clown goby, Tailspot blenny, and the 4-stripe damsel. Maybe I’ll swap the damsel for a pair of Pygmy filefish but that all depends on if they ever are available again.
