Sorry for MIA for a while, it’s been a little set back in my system in the last two months.
So the story began around 2 months ago, one morning noticed my Rr Pink Floyd didn’t have good pe like normal. I knew for sure something wrong happening because it’s my “indicator corals” in the 100 gallons system.
(If you new with this term, I always pick one corals in my system that ALWAYS has good polyps extension to be the “indicator”. Everytime I walk by the tank, I have a habit of quickly look at that coral. Every systems has a different one. For example both of my systems have rr Pink Floyd, but only the Pink Floyd colony in this 100 gallons system always has CRAZY pe. On my 45 gallons system, the Asd doomsday colony was the one instead.)
Come back to the story, I did 20 gallons water change and change GAC (more than normal amount). It’s my procedure everytime something goes wrong (~everytime I notice my “indicators” coral doesn’t look happy).
The next day everything brown! And I meant everything! Fishes still look normal, active and eating. Water still crystal clear. Temp, alk normal.
Not even have the time to think what happens, I saved a cup of water for later ipc test and I did another 50 gallons water change.
The 3rd day some random frags started rtn. Horrified, I remove whatever can remove and transfer them to my other system. (It’s the new frag system with has been set up and running for...7 days). The other that encrusted to the rock and couldn’t remove I cut branches of them and move those to the frag tank with the hope I can save some. Did another water change. Still, I don’t know what wrong!
Think of some possibilities like something drop into the tank. I checked carefully, nothing.
ICP test come back with the results of everything normal. Only phosphate was high (0.3ppm, yes, not 0.03, but 0.3). I haven’t test for phosphate since...forever so I have no idea what number to compare. How high is high? So I run to my buddy house and...test his water! (His system is a copy version of mine, same filtration, same reefing philosophy) and he has...0.35ppm of phosphate! So the problematic didn’t come from phosphate.
Meanwhile the corals look worst and worst day by day. Getting super brown/dark and super skinny. I was stressed. Still, I couldn’t find out what wrong. The real problem is don’t know what’s cause the problem, isn’t it?

Only one possibility that I cannot eliminate:
Check out this picture
9803269bbaa409bcc8f6c1f454441cc3.jpg

He’s sunbathing like every day! And spraying sunblock like crazy! Spray 2 bottles at the same time! Meanwhile I have window open with fan turn on (to dehumidify). I was able to smell the fume standing inside my house!
A buddy of mine said I am paranoid! But it’s kind of make sense.
First, the corals went from colorful to super brown in 2 day —> something poisonous infected the tank.
ICP test confirms that no heavy metal or traces overdosed
Fishes showed no sign of distress mean if poisonous dropped into the tank, it’s a very little amount.
It’s suitable with my theory of sunblock’s spray. Because it’s only a little getting into the room and end up in the tank.
Let me know what you think?!

Almost 2 months later, the corals that I left in the 100 gallons getting healthier slowly everyday. And I haven’t lost anything!
Whenever the corals I moved into my new frag tank keep rtn one by one.
I don’t know because most the one I moved to the frag tank was frag (they were not encrusted) so they had smaller change of survival or moved them was my mistake (huge one) since the tank was new.
But here’s the casualties: (there’re a lot more I threw into the trash bin already!)

Enough for sad story, here are some positive for the day!
The first pics was taken on 07/02 when I first notice sign of life came back on corals I left on the 100 gallons. I wish I took those pictures when they were brown! ☹️
From brown, they change a little bit to green and polyps are out! Tiny, but noticeable. To me, polyps out mean they are doing good. Not coloration, but polyps is the indicator for coral health!

Take advantage of the system’s health come back, I stock up the tank! Luckily my buddy provide me enough frag to stock up this system.
Most of the corals have lineage from my colonies, but the colorations are totally different (in a better way!). That said corals can be so much different in different system!
You’ll see:
1. Walt Disney. My WD was yellow and pink whenever this frag has green and kind of orange. The color is super rich and vivid.

2. Rrc Pretty in Pink. This coral surprise me the most.
Look at mine:

Now look at this frag: his colony was acquired from my colony. Like a totally different coral!

If your buddies tank is established that could be the difference. Acros in a new tank don't seem to handle phosphate levels the same way they do in an established tank. When I first setup a frag tank they corals were doing fine until I started dosing reef energy a and b. I must of had a bad batch because my phosphate levels in both tanks went up to .4 over a week. The coral in my frag tank all started to die while my display didn't notice.

I think the spray could have been a factor or some kind of pesticide being sprayed outside is common for STN incidents. STN is some kind of lack of resistant to whatever acros are fighting in the water already and making changes sometimes can backfire. Newer system and wild colonies a notorious for STN. But IME if its more than 1 acro effective its probably chemical or sudden change in chemistry, and if its 1 acro then its immunity of that acro.

I also had a minor frag tank crash, the heat was the cause of mine...I know what you feel V!

I'm sorry, i am glad things are looking up and you figured out the problem. If your friendly with your neighbor you could explain the situation and maybe he will take precautions.

Make some change in the sump, I remove the chaeto tank. So right now only marinepure and skimmer in the sump.

I also add a small jebao pump in return section to stir up detritus

Same concept on my frag tank

I add some water level sensor in the return session to notify me if the pump turn off. Also if the sensor is trigger, skimmer, ato and fan will turn off.

What good of the thread without corals pictures right?!
Things are recovering in a very good rate, but nowhere near their “prime time”

So sad to read this, I could cry for you! :(
Thank you! I was so stressed I didn’t want to look at the tank! I lost many good corals, some are extremely hard to find species, some are from friend whom I promised hold for them until they “get back in the hobby”,....
I feel like a noob when I told them my tank just crash, they ask why and I said I don’t know! ☹️☹️☹️

I also had a minor frag tank crash, the heat was the cause of mine...I know what you feel V!
Oh wow, sorry to hear that bro!
It’s was a scary week, my tank jumped to 83F even with my house ac on and all light turned off.

That was hard to read. We were recently skorkeling in cozumel and I noticed that there people are starting to become very aware of the damage suntan lotion can do!
I read some paper and youtube about how harmful of the sun block (especially the spray one because it can travel in the air).

Everything seem getting back on track, the encrusted base leftovers when I moved colonies to other system also come back to life.

RMF Psycoberry also show sign of color and polyps. Still look pretty upset though. Hopefully I can save this one. Beautiful species.

RRU Carolina Reaper. Still look ugly, but it’s been amazing come back from super brown and skinny a couple week ago. I am happy with the process.

Looks like you are back on track.
As far as I understand you did only waterchanges as counter measure for the corals to die?

Yes, I suspected chemical get into the tank that’s why I only did water change and replace GAC.
