DAILY QUESTION: How do you use lighting programs like Coral Acclimation and Clouds to benefit your tank?
I've never used a formal coral program as my lighting is not that strong. The few coral frags that I have are on a rack towards the bottom and not directly under the light. They are all open and look good so far.

DAILY QUESTION: How has reef lighting technology evolved since you first started reefing?
Well... When I first started it was mostly MH or T10, T8 was just starting to show up. Now we've got T5VHO and ramping LEDs with storms and sunrise/sunset and all the cool features that probably drive our fish crazy.

To be honest my kessil is manual and I dont have an acclimation feature! Having a light that had one would be a game changer

What challenges have you faced with previous reef lighting systems?

I struggle to find the perfect balance between white light and blue light. My little kessil is growing my corals well in my small tank, first really thriving tank Ive had that centers around corals. I usually just keep them fowlr because corals can be challenging

How important is ease of maintenance when selecting a reef light?

Really important! Lights are not cheap…

DAILY QUESTION: How has reef lighting technology evolved since you first started reefing?
DAILY QUESTION REPLY: $$$ and the most important evolution was the successful invention of the BLUE LED by Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano, Nakamura, who received the 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics "for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes, which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources". In 2015, his input into the commercialization and development of energy-efficient white LED lighting technology was recognized by the Global Energy Prize.

Reef lighting technology has come a long way since 1985. Back then, most reef enthusiasts relied on basic fluorescent lights or metal halide lamps to illuminate their tanks. Here's a breakdown of how the technology has evolved:
  1. Fluorescent Lighting (1980s-1990s):
  2. Metal Halide Lighting (1990s-2000s):
  3. Compact Fluorescents (1990s-2000s):
  4. LED Lighting (2000s-Present):
    • Game Changer: The introduction of LED lighting revolutionized the hobby. LEDs offer customizable spectrums, energy efficiency, and low heat output, making them ideal for reef tanks.
    • Evolution: Early LED systems were expensive and sometimes lacked the power needed for larger tanks. Over time, however, the technology advanced, with better spectrums, higher intensity, and features like programmable lighting schedules and lunar cycles.
    • Current Trends: Modern LED systems are now the standard for reef tanks. They provide precise control over light intensity and spectrum, simulating natural sunlight conditions and promoting coral growth and coloration. The affordability and availability of quality LED systems have made them accessible to a wider range of hobbyists.
  5. Hybrid Systems (2010s-Present):
The shift from energy-intensive and heat-producing options like metal halides to highly efficient and customizable LEDs represents the most significant change in reef lighting technology over the years.

Not super important but is definitely a selling point.
The easier it is the more possible I'll do it. But I probably wouldnt even consider it with led honestly, didnt in the past (did I kessil?).
