I have both, emeralds and pithos. Originally the emeralds were casually picking at the bubble algae and after I put the pithos in they suddenly decided to turn it into their main course. I'm not sure why but at night I saw the emeralds eating the bubble algae more than they had before. The pithos seem only to eat the algae on the lower half/third of the rock work while the emeralds eat the rest. I have an absolutely giant male emerald and he seems to be the be the better bubble destroyer. He can pull up large sections at a time with his giant claws. I've not seen either go after coral but the pithos like to burrow under them.
