Why is it when I add a shipping box and I go to check out the price doubles

It's because it's trying to charge you shipping on the shipping module... lol

Can I buy a shipping module after I buy any item? I'm making a 12 hour drive today and won't be driving the whole time but not sure how much attention I'll be able to pay to the auction. May, not be worth it for me. But if I see something I like can I buy it then buy the shipping module?

Is my understanding that if you don't buy anything one the live sale they'll refund your shipping module

Not a problem at all! They are available throughout the sale and for the next day or so after. Just keep in mind that if delivery dates are important those dates you might need might be already sold out.
