Hello all, lookimg for ideas. I have a 25 Waterbox cube penninsula with live rock, a Duncan coral, a green star polyp coral, rainbow bubbletip anenome, 2 cardinal fish and a turbo snail. Everyone was happy 2 days ago. I used 1/4 top Reef Roids for the first time 2 days ago at the recommendation of my local fish store. Water got cloudyish but I figured it was the Reedlf Roids. Today, all corals are closed. The Bubbletip has moved to the bottom of a rock and seems pretty deflated. Water test shows: Salinity 1.025, Alk 189, Alk dkh 10.2, ph 7.7, phosphate 0.04, calcium 353, magnesium 1106, amonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5.

I used an ai hd16, on gorgeous 8 hrs a day.

Any ideas?

Welcome to R2R :). Not sure if this has anything to do with your issues, but I would work on raising Mg and Ca since both are pretty low (if those numbers are accurate). When you say you did 1/4 top of Reef Roids, what do you mean? Regardless of what caused it, I would start by doing a large water change and see if things improve.

Well reef roid will not cause that, imo.
I dont use it but have, and have never seen it get cloudy so?
As above said with mag and calcium.
I am not a fan of high alk. Average ocean alk is 6.5
I run alk 7, cal 420, mag 1350.

I run 7 16hds on acro and lps systems.
What are your settings.
Not saying its the issue.
Most dont run them strong enough.
Here is my old 20g nano cube lit by 2 16hds for reference.
You can pm me for help if needed.

Plus one on bacterial bloom. Let me ask you this. Does your water smell funny? Like almost a chemical smell? I used LPS fauna food to feed my corals and 2 for 2 times it sparked a bacterial bloom same cloudy same smell. Now the one time a week I use it I run my UV for two days after feeding and it keeps it from blooming

Here's a screenshot of my light. I really have a hard time getting the right lighting, so much info out there.

My tank is 9 months old. Has been so stable, I do water changes every 7-10 days of 25%..

Sorry for my typos on my first post. I meant to say I added 1/4 tablespoon Reef Roids.

Woke up today to the Duncan lookimg good, BTA closed and green star almost totally closed

Thank you everyone for ypur thoughts. This is my first tank!

I have the same light. It’s not the light I promise. Your water is cloudy. Exactly like mine when I started using coral food. If things are looking happier then what happened is since your initial post your tank is starting to stabilize and clear that bloom up. I would bet that once your water clears up your tank will be back to normal. This is exactly what happened to me when I started using coral food. Seriously I just dealt with this in the past couple weeks. It clears on its own. I avoid it by running UV for 2 days after feeding coral food.

As suspected. The dose is one TEASPOON for every 100g which means you’re supposed to be using a quarter TEASPOON not tablespoon. Plus factoring in displacement depending on how much rock and sand you have. You may be dealing with 20 gallons and not 25. Which means it’s even less food than recommended dose

For a bacterial bloom which is what it looks like in the pictures. A water change does absolutely nothing.
Water change will Always help

your theory is to let everything suffer in oxygen depleted water because in your opinion a water change will do nothing

a water change will reduce the amount of water born bacteria, restoring o2 levels, raise Ph resulting in relief for the animals

when did a water change ever hurt anything?!

I'm thinking way too much roids. When I feed roids I use one of these scoops mixed with tank water and some acro power. If it were me I would start with a water change but I still consider myself a rookie. Tank I feed is about 40g total 16762191716963864557911691965313.jpg

Heterotrophic bacteria are multyplying every 20 min or so, so water change will not keep up with their growth. Protein skimmer, UV sterilizer, Carbon are the solution.

Something changed chemically and with the Overfeeding of reef roids can be your Phos-nitrate-ammonia level in form of a spike. I would test those levels and change water and see how they respond to water change. I use 1-2 of those little scoops for a 400g tank

MG is very low. My LPS hate that and I have never seen an accurate test lower than 1160ppm.
Bump that number into 1350-1440ppm.
The low MG can also result in cloudy waters as Alk and CA come together (precipitate).
It may not be the answer, but Id increase that MG if your confident in your test result.
MG IMM, is as important as all the rest.

Protein skimmer, UV sterilizer, Carbon are the solution.
Again

All things a water change can do and does immediately

since when is it not beneficial to do a water change

Over time your skimmer pulls out dissolved organics, water change does this immediately

Over time UV kills bacteria, to be removed by skimmer. Water change does this immediately

Over time carbon pulls dissolved organics, water change does this immediately

a water change is an immediate solution to the problem. Remove dirty, problematic water and replace with clean fresh water. Dilution is the solution to the pollution

a water change will help the original poster with their issue immediately

that’s the goal here right?

people often WAY over complicate reef tanks. For me here it’s simple.
By OP admission everything was going smashingly until she started feeding reefroids. First thing I’m assuming if it’s my tank is that it’s the reef roids. I’m going to investigate that avenue first.

like I stated. I literally just trouble shot this problem in my pico. I started using coral food and got an instant bacterial bloom. WATERCHANGE did nothing. In 30 mins it was exactly how it was. I did nothing and let it subside on its own. Used coral food a second time BAM instant bacterial bloom next day. Did research on bacterial blooms and chose to buy a UV. Now every time I use coral food I also run UV for next 2 days. No bloom simple solution for 50 bucks. Innovative marine desktop skimmer modified plastic to fit my pico
