I am building a stand using the general directions from Rocketengineer. I have done this build before and its quite easy. Well in this build, I am creating a 46" long cabinet for a 42" long tank. I was planning on building the support legs as an "L" (blue and green in diagram) with the "L" directly under the corners of the tank (with the cross beams also under the tank so the 2X4s directly underneath the tank.

However, to get a larger sump in I would like to turn the legs in the front facing out. About 1/2 of the front leg in the "L" would still be under the corner of the tank but now its more like a "T".

I will use plywood on the top of the stand and so will it matter in any way if I go with design #2? Is the weight still supported in the same way?

As long as the tank corners are supported directly underneath, it should be fine.

As long as you have a solid 1.5" bearing on the leg, you should be fine. Plywood top has no relevance here.

Wasn't sure if there was any weight distribution via the top but in any case, the corner would sit on one full 3.5 wide 2X4 and 1/2 of a second 2X4.

So basically blue and green at the top views of the 2X4s and the black box is the edge of the tank. So there would be 1 inch or so of the Green 2X4 that is outside the corner of the tank.
