I had 5 CBB over the years. NONE of them bother Tridacnid clams while devour oyster and other shellfish. We call these animal clams, but Tridacnid clams are not at all like steamer clams. Over the millennium, I am sure Tridacnid evolved to have a very distasteful mantle to prevent been eaten by fish and other mobile animals.

So happy to hear as I had a CBB in the past, and it never bothered clams, but did other lps, so had to rehome it. Now I have another coming and was a bit worried about the clams. I will not panic then about moving all my clams to the large tank. Most are still growing out in my smaller system. Except the giga.

What I own Crocea, Hippo, Maxima and Durasa. I feed SD Aquatic clam food, run Viraspectra lights, and I can tell what any clam is as I have raised clams for over seven years. Furthermore, I do not run an ultra clean system. I just keep a system more natural, one system even has macro algae growing in it.

Interested in trying a clam. What type of fish anemones or invertebrates would not be advantageous to have in tank with them. Have hi nitrates 25 also will they help reduce?

You really want to be warned of the nutrient intake these guys have. Juveniles aren’t so bad but as they age they take in more. Also you want to make sure you have it in the spot you want as once they attach their foot it’s likely you aren’t getting them back off.

When I was in high school, I use to tread for clams in the Great South Bay on Long Island. Wetsuit, lots of zinc oxide, really blonde hair, wetsuit, laundry basket in an inner tube... Picture jogging in water for eight hours a day in the blazing sun. Oh, to be young again.

In person, I can ID all the giant clam species. Sometime one or two photos of a clam may not be enough to positively ID the species of the clam.

I'd love to try clams but I assume my lights aren't strong enough for them so maybe after I upgrade again.

You'd be surprised. We used to easily keep Derasa Clams next to LPS under VHOs and compact fluorescents back in the day with success

Yeah my Nitrates bottomed out when I wasn't watching closely. I definitely attribute it to my maxima and Derasa in my mini mixed reef.

i’m new to clams and can only ID a crocea or maxima (usually, i can confuse these at times).

currently own 2 clams. a crocea, and gold maxima. the crocea is about 2-3inches, and the good maxima is about 3-5inches

Derasa Clams are easy to ID. Squamosa vs maxima for me not so much. And now we know there are a bunch of hybrids that make it really confusing
