In a world of constant ammonia control issues in reef tanks, during cycling and during daily running (millions of threads searchable daily across forums) and with myriad correction products available for remedy: why is it that when the tester is using a seneye, almost nobody reports ammonia control or needs supplemental remedies?

Every cycle is done by day ten in reality? Nobody's ten month reef tank is really suffering from a broken cycle? That's big news, to buyers who were taught the original rules, currently under revision by seneye owners.

How did test kit hysteria originally create false cycling rules for us and how will new testing means alter our microbiology and current markets?

Were there telltale signs in the forumverse of this conflict, even before seneye came along?

I consider ammonia control part of chemistry

Apparently others do too

Maybe consider it a v2 of that chemistry article on ammonia in reefing, how testing impacts us and reefing actions, costs.

In order to know the levels referenced in Randy's article above, and steps to take, we need the measure to be accurate. That's reef chemistry

I would say ammonia toxicity- yes, ammonia control sounds more bacterial

in reefing there is a lot of overlap between water chemistry and biochemistry ….
Still confused with the AFR calcium formate process
also Tropic Marin’s line of Reef Actif, NP plus, et …yes Iget the use, but all this from just sugar dosing?
Lou does a decent job but I’d like to here from RHF for a unbiased opinion

Sure but your original post seems to focus on the cycle. Not proper testing or toxicity

I'd like to know the speed that calcium carbonate particles can dissolve through decomposition of organics on its surface and if calcium reactors are stupid?

I like to see something on P / PO4 and the different types of PO4. Orthophosphate vs. polyphosphate vs. phosphate particles etc… Are these important or not important etc… Liquid vs. particulate PO4 etc…

What do we actually measure with PO4 test kits etc…

There is lot of information on the R2R site but there is no article to clear up the facts from fiction etc…

Just a suggestion,

It may not address all questions, but this one addresses many of those

Randy likes polymers; maybe something about that?

“Polymers in the Reef Aquarium”

:D

This was partly as a joke. My mind is blanking.

Let’s be nice please! ;)
Not too many of us ever found chemistry to be nice?

What is THE ONE Reef Chemistry article you would love to read or see a fresh revision of?

How about a comprehense shallow dive into when to start "dosing" and how to measure and adjust as we go?

Lots of folks come on here trying to dose their tanks into health but haven't got a grasp of the over all picture of how to seek stability and control outcomes by testing & dosing.

I would argue the literature on reef chemistry is already fairly comprehensive from RHF and others. The Reef Chemistry series is practically a free book already.
I'd be curious/would like more clarification on the role of DOM or ORP in the reef, whether or not it is worth checking and pursuing, and how much of an impact it actually has. I know Salem Clemens is doing some work there

The enzymatic processes that each trace element participates in, in corals.
This is biochemistry, useful but I wonder how much of the subject is still unknown in corals?

Interesting angle on the question.

Randy has written enough on reef chemistry. I think we should push the author in a new direction. If I can paraphrase Brandon’s idea, an article or more likely a series of articles on popular misconceptions in the saltwater aquarium hobby. This could include Randy occasionally enlisting local talent to test ideas or claims, a “challenge of the month” as an addition to the reef chemistry question.

I think Randy’s long involvement and many connections in the hobby put him in an excellent position to grasp the history and psychology of reefing myths and misconceptions. Randy’s far ranging technical expertise makes him the best choice for writing this sort of article. Randy also understands how challenging world views can be troubling and will do very well writing balanced and minimally threatening articles. There likely will be a substantial increase in R2R traffic because of the series.

If Randy agrees to this venture, I suggest that he be put into some sort of witness protection program or at least given a vicious watch dog.

An article exploring the significance of ionic balance in reef tanks.

It still is would likely overlap biochemistry though.
