If I upgrade my tank from 29 gal to 40 gal with sump , transfer everything over and it doesn't go into a cycle how aged is my tank ? Is it as old as the 29 gal or do I consider the 40 a new set up ? I'm asking bc I was interested in maybe getting a nem but I know the tank needs to be well established

I don’t think there is a rule on this. Speculative estimate would probably be an average of the 2 tanks’ ages.
The 29 gal would have been a year this month, i used everything that was in the 29 gal and the 40 I bought used and got everything that was in that one as well , so if the 40 was running for 3 yrs and the 29 for 1 yr we could say 2 yrs is the average?

I’d say that’s a safe compromise, but none of this is science. Either one is old enough for a bubble tip. I had my first one at 6 months. It did just fine and lived for many years. Split a couple times too.

Thank you , I'm just thinking of adding a nem but I'm still unsure I'm afraid it will die and nuke the tank

They don’t nuke tanks. Thats a bad rumor. They just die and decompose like anything else. This might spike your nutrients a bit, but won’t “nuke” your tank like a pufferfish with toxins or anything.

That's good to know, my nitrates are high right now but I put some cheto in the sump to help with that

They really aren’t that hard to keep. If you’ve been in the hobby for 3 years, I bet you will do great with a bubble tip.
The 40 I bought off a buddy of mine so I don't really know how long it was up and running, I will find out tomorrow when I message him

Okay I definitely was going to , can I just use panty hose for that ?
Reminds me of setting up my first freshwater tanks when I was a kid

"Mom, can I have a pair of your old Leggs?"

/looks weird at her son

"It's for my fish. I need to put some charcoal in it to filter the water"

"Ahh, ok"
