Does anyone use one? How many watts? I'm checking out ones on amazon that are about 1000 watts but not sure if that's sufficient enough?

Depends on how long you want the battery to last and what you have running when the power goes out? I have a 1000w myself and when the power goes out I have the Apex power everything off except the essentials... return pump and heater.

How long does the 1000 watt backup last? What are your heater and return pump specs?

Watts are meaningless, it only tells you how much power it will deliver instantaneously. What you really want to know is Watt-hours or Joules, that tells you how long it will deliver X Watts for. If it is rated for 1000 W and 500 W-hrs then it will only power 1000 W for 1/2 hour.

Also, depending on what you want to power, you'll likely need much less than 1000 W peak. Marketers like big, impressive numbers for their goods so they might go with an impressive Watts number but, since they are based on batteries, they might not deliver those Watts for very long.
