I have a 30g tank and it’s my first bare bottom. After making the switch, I don’t think I’m ever going back to having a sand bed. The flow is important and I’ve had to experiment a lot while trying to dial it in. Having enough flow to clear out detritus without upsetting particular corals is a delicate balance.

A few weeks ago I got a brittle star, and he is extremely useful. His crawling/scavenging under the rocks has helped clear out little pockets of “dust” that can accumulate under the rocks. I’d highly recommend one!

Wow! Your tank looks amazing. My 40g looks so small compared to yours. What's the dimension? Also, which powerhead do you have?

Thank you, it’s my favorite tank! It’s similar in dimensions to a 40g breeder. Here are the specific dimensions: 35.43" L x 14.96" W x 12.99" H. Although I just say it’s a 3 foot long tank. But the actual display would be equivalent to like 3 10x10 cubes.

Part of the tricky flow situation is because of the length. I have a Nero 3 on the left side and a small “junk” power head in the lower back corner on the right. I’ll be getting another Nero 3 in the near future for the right side. If I had a 40 cube, I think a single well-placed Nero 3 would be perfect. But because of the length of my set up I really wanted to add some more flow on the right side to shore up any dead spots and have more control over the ability to tune flow in that zone.

Are you running something closer to a 40g breeder size or a cube?
