Did someone answer you Tim? I think 1-2" is fine. My tank has ~1in median sand height but areas that are higher and lower, so the wrasses have options. Their spots seem to naturally pile up.

Isn't this the small nem tank?
Question:

If I add more sand am I good for a sand sleeper?

So which sand sleeper is best suited to a 5.6 gallon tank? He'll be housed with a Naso tang.

I think the better question is which species of frogfish to you want you quarantine the sand sleeper with?

Well, had to drive to Ann Arbor for a doctor appt today and swung by a couple different stores on the way home. Ended up bringing home 4 fish from Petco, none from the other store. The wrasse had apparently been there for 8 months.

Grabbed a hooded flame fairy wrasse (Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus) for the wrasse and butterfly tank, an exquisite firefish (Nemateleotris exquisita) for the seahorse tank), and 2 fusilier damsels (Lepidozygus tapeinosoma) for the wrasse and butterfly tank.

I don't know...I think I'll need a closer look. Why don't you send him here and I'll check him out?

In all seriousness though he looks great
This weekend, if he still there for 89.00, I am going to get him home.

Is that pencil eating frozen mysis yet? That is my splendid pencil's favorite
It is. Completely ignored TDO and NLS pellets. Likes Reef Nutrition refrigerated PacPods, but not ArctiPods. Likes live baby brine. Doesn't care for ROE (weirdo). So I went to the LFS and picked up frozen mysis, and he loves it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The splendid pintail fairy also likes the mysis, so that's a win win. I think I can use frozen mysis with metro/focus. Once the Kanaplex is done I'll switch to Metro/Focus and think about Prazi

Do we need more pinkie spam? Uh, yes! So… here was my pair that actually spawned. I still have the male from this pair and need to get a photo with his new female to compare.

Honestly, when new they’ll be shy but when used to their surroundings they’re active.
