Hi Wrasse experts - is there any truth to the following - the coloration of Harlequin Tusk determines whether they're called an Aussie or Indo, not the absolute territory they come from. It is assumed that there are areas where both colorations are present and may be caught by Indo divers.

Essentially this is the case. It’s like the Cebu and Indo lubbocki, they are both found in an overlapping region - Cebu. But have clear colour variants.

Okay so what’s stated is true. How about those LFS that imports directly from Australia? Are they all coming in with brighter colors or are they also a mixed bag? Or is there a pre-selection process in Australia to only ship the brighter color ones?

I’ve done a thing again.
I went to an LFS for manganese and well, it was the LFS that is great for wrasses. So I obviously left with a new wrasse - yes, after saying that I wouldn’t get any fish this month.
So, instead of clues… Spot the newbie in the list!

I think all that come in from Australia are collected down towards Queensland so you’ll find that it’s less likely an Indo variation (i believe they’re theorised to be Subspecies) to appear on an Aussie import.

And! This guy is possibly transitioning to male - I really hope I can finally see a male (yes, this may be a clue).

Yes!!

A gorgeous (possibly transitioning) female twistii to go with my second. I love how they just constantly circulate round the rocks all day, rarely ever going into the main swim lanes.

One day an anampses will be mine!
I do love the look of the twistii
It seems this species also has variations with the yellow - the one from I believe Indonesia is the one I’ve picked up and the Red Sea/African variation has much less yellow.

By the looks of it, this is the male colouration! It’s not too dissimilar to the females but dang the whole yellow head is stunning.

I love the yellow. And the spots... I'm a sucker for the spots.

@OrionN has a pair that I have admired from the first day I saw their photos.

I was gonna guess the Tamarin because I was thinking you only had 1...
Yeah, I’ve only had one twistii - if I had the chance I would’ve had 2 much sooner.

Also been eyeing up the neoguinaicus… we’ll see how much I break with wrasses as I’m also considering adding a lineatus to the list with the Laboute’s pair and a Kaleidos female.

The spots are what make Anampses and Macropharyngodon so beautiful. Oh and we can’t forget the stripey faces that sand sleepers seem to get when they transition to males!
