Someone mentioned Boat paint and that sure makes sense.
That was me, I suggest Duralux marine paint; just my opinion.
DURALUX MARINE ENAMEL
A single package, alkyd enamel designed for use on commercial or pleasure boats. DURALUX MARINE ENAMEL is also ideal for equipment, onshore and offshore oil rigs, bridges, tanks and most other structural objects. It fights rust and corrosion under moderate exposure to salt water, fuel oils and harsh cleaning solutions. DURALUX MARINE ENAMEL is available in seventeen ready-mixed high gloss marine colors, and three camouflage colors.

If I were going to paint a stand, inside or out, I would use the Valspar cabinet paint. And plan on doing at least 5 coats.

If you want to hide the wood grain, put down the primer and let it dry really well. Take spackle (wall patch stuff) and put a very thin coat over it to fill in the wood grain. Let it dry for a day and sand it smooth. Then, paint over it and the grain will be gone.

I have learned from experience in the last 2 weeks that 5 coats of paint alone isn't enough to hide the wood grain. This has worked very well for my kitchen cabinets.
I do use wood putty and sand before I ever prime. Sorry, I thought that was a given.

@Katrina71 If you are wanting a purple tang, I am about to take in one with hlle and make it better. It will not be going through qt, until the hlle is healed up, unless I can get time at home to do TTM plus peroxide qt. It will be needing a home though when all healed.
Oooooh. That's right up our alley.

I found wood putty not to work nearly as well as spackling compound for woodwork, just prime the wood before you use it. Makes a crazy smooth surface if done right.
