The elk in Europe is Alces alces and the word (like the Swedish Älg) probably originate from the latin alces or the german elch. To be total correct - the word moose refers to the american sub species Alces alces americana. The animal some americans name for elk is really a large species from the family Cervus. the European red deer is a smaller species from the same genus The oldest name on this animal is wapiti and it is from the Shawnee and Cree word waapiti - means white rump. If we call them something - it is wapiti.
