TANK TALK: If there was one thing/product you wish that Avast Marine/Top Lids made that they don't right now, what would it be and why?
Revisiting this one so it may not count for an entry but decided to throw it out there anyway. How about a magnetic glass scrubber style acrylic buffer with a round footprint that can be attached to a power drill to make quick easy work of buffing out acrylic tanks.

TANK TALK: Post a picture of your oldest piece of aquarium equipment. Whether it's a vintage skimmer, an ancient test kit, or a relic from the early days of your reefing journey, share the story behind it for entry into the giveaway.
I don't have it anymore as I left the hobby for a few yeats, but I won a probe holder from you back in 2010ish.

Fish net from 30+ years ago. This was from my first fish tank with gold fishes. The fish net came very handy scooping out the dead gold fishes, lol. Back then, I didn't know any better on how to raise freshwater except feeding it and keeping it warm. I didn't know about dechlorinating the water. The poor gold fishes was scooped up by this net.

You guys bring up an interesting topic. New technology is so much more advanced and can be way better than older equipment but it rarely lasts anywhere near as long. Old skimmers skim just st as good as new skimmers but new skimmers are easier to adjust (sometimes). Old sumps were one way in, single direction of flow, one way out while some newer sumps split the incoming flow direction and hit multiple chambers simultaneously with less flow. Old lights were hot and bright but new lights don't necessarily grow corals as good (even though the spectrum should be better).

Assuming tank is not considered equipment, oldest I still have is an inkbird from 2021:

TODAY'S TANK TALK PROMPT: Happy Thanksgiving! Share one thing (or person) you're thankful for in this reef hobby!
Let's to the game, but happy that my wife and New son made it through the delivery healthy in the end. There was a NICU stay and preeclampsia.

This is interesting- for wet use with a Dobie pad or similar? To pull off tough coralline?

I see that often too; a race to the bottom in pricing and hence build quality. I personally hate the throwaway mentality. “Oh, it broke, I’ll just toss it and buy a new one since it’s cheap”. So we really try to design and build our Avast gear to prevent that. Parts do wear out, that’s unavoidable. But fixing equipment should be accessible and straightforward.
Re: lights, I was listening to Sanjay Joshi’s talk at our last club meeting and one little tidbit really surprised me. Metal halides and LED’s are both about the same in terms of efficiency, photons generated per dollar of electricity. The LED’s just kick all that heat out the top/back, while MH emits it equally in all directions.

to his point, something that would scrape coraline off acrylic would be great! there is the tiger shark, but it's hard to spend that kind of money. I 3d printed a handle to hold a piece of acrylic that borks bell enough, but keeping my arm out the tank or getting tight corners are a no go with mine.

be sab this with our vacuum (the green brand stick from hd). the head broke after too much dog and wife hair. they sent us a new vaccuum, so now i have to deal with a perfectly functional motor and stick, without the head.

Interesting! I've run MH, T5, T12, and LEDs over the past 30+ years I've been doing aquariums (I actually started with the old 10 gallon with regular light bulbs). Living in Arizona, the heat distribution of the LEDs works a lot better, but it makes sense as watts are watts, ri?

TANK TALK: Reflect on your most significant reefing achievement or milestone. Whether it's successfully keeping a challenging coral or achieving a stable and thriving reef, share the moment that made you most proud as a reefer.

I guess this can be a milestone for me. I got the majority of the equipment I need to start a first time new reef tank this Black Friday. Along with that, I got most of the plans and researches for starting a reef tank done which includes the tank I will need. For the tank itself, I have decided from which tank builder and size I'll be getting. I'll be putting in my deposit in the next few days and then start a build thread. It's been somewhat of a stressful journey planning.

This was backcin 2011ish, but I had only been in the hobby for 2 or so years and Ichad friends in the hobby for way longer who would say my tank was the prettiest and cleanest they have seen in person. everything was doing great and sps were really taking off. I can't wait tochave corals really do well in my current tank.

My controller on this also crapped out... I bought a reef octopus various 4. And with a little cramming and modding. The skimmer has run flawless for 3 yrs 24/7

I overcame a tank crash! Back in February or March of 2022 my 75 gallon reef was getting a HUGE amount of GHA and nothing I did fixed it. Water changes seemed to make things worse, fish were dying for no reason it seemed, my corals were getting covered and smothered and dying, and I couldn't keep up. Then, I found the problem - a rusted magnet. I removed the old powerhead and within a week all GHA was gone. The only things left alive were a few Leptos and Favias and some Montis. Within a couple of days I noticed that the Montis were still struggling - then I found Montipora Eating Nudibranches. I had already setup my 125 and was prepping to transfer everything over. I transferred 2 Lepto/Pavonas, 2 Cyphastrea, and a Favia. I moved my Tomini, Lawnmower, and some Bangaiis. Everything else was a loss. I couldn't reuse the rock or sand because of the Nudis.

Today, the 125 is struggling some with a few corals - mainly Euphyllia and Acros - but the tank itself overall is doing really well.
