Never claimed it was best practice, but that’s how it works.Due to the stress of not having enough room. Your feet will do the same thing in shoes to small and it will be painful for you also.

That's an apt description. or analogy.Due to the stress of not having enough room. Your feet will do the same thing in shoes to small and it will be painful for you also.
well as long as it is about 75 to 80% the average size(not max size) I would think that's comfortable enough for the fish? personal opinion that's allI’ve had my purple tang 3 1/2 years. It has grown maybe an inch. Tank is 6 foot 135 gallon.
The fish would grow much bigger in an 800 gal. Does that make me an evil fish master?
What if the fish was in a 4 foot 90 gallon? I bet it would be smaller.
Do all the members of the tang police have giant tanks? I bet 85% of tangs don’t grow to their full size due to being placed in tanks that aren’t 300 + gallons.
Really depends on what motivates you in the hobby.I’ve had my purple tang 3 1/2 years. It has grown maybe an inch. Tank is 6 foot 135 gallon.

at one point i had a 3/4” blue tang that grew to around 4 inches in a yearIf I’m honest, 3 to 6 inches will be around 1-2 years and then to get to 8-9 inches from 3 inches is around 3-5 years.
Tangs in your 4’ tank heavily restrict you to Ctenochaetus and smaller Zebrasoma. This is assuming you don’t want to add other fish - If you do then you’ll find tangs long term need to be in either a large 5’ tank (180G 5’) or a 6’ tank.
Thanks, I ended up with a bristletooth white/yellow tail tang from Tahiti, eats pellets. No aggression with all other fishes except the diamond watchman goby. Those two play a Tom and Jerry game. White-yellow tail Tang makes a move to chase Diamond goby and goby dissapears under the sand only to come out at a different exit and confuses the h*ck out of the Tang. Not sure what's going on with those twoYou gave me advice on making my tank quiet. I bought a yellow tang for my tank. Currently it is in a 40 holding. Already about 3 inches. Came that way. I purchased it from Biota. I had a white tailed bristle tooth. Kept it in a 5 foot tank. Seemed content. But agreed he wanted a larger tank. Had it 5 years. Bought a 230.6 6.3 long. Then due to the loss of another larger fish sold the tank. The bristle tooth and regal angel went with the tank. It was the right decision. I hope this tang does well in my new tank. I would listen yo Orion, he has always helped me. IMO
