so I had an idea for my stand for my future tank..

stand for tank would be 36 inches tall by 4 ft. tank will be 4 ft 75/90/120/240 whatever the best deal is when I can get it.
on either side of the stand a 6 foot column skinned to match stand with access for hob overflows and plumbing down into the sump area of the stand.

across the top a matching canopy front with piano hinge approximately 15 inches tall to access the top of tank. here lights would be hanging etc.

basically creating a in wall unit with modular pieces..

all 4 pieces the stand, two columns and the canopy would be built separately and then linked .

What do you think? would that work?

I have no idea about the engineering aspect, but it sounds cool. Are you thinking of doing hidden shelving in the columns? Are you doing it as a room divider or against the wall? Not being nosey, but I may borrow this idea down the road.

the columns will definitely have shelving.. this will go against a wall. in the house that we are having built, we are taking one of the bedrooms and turning it into my office/mancave. my tank will be in that.. we are leaving the closet in place for future resale at some point (want to keep it identifiable as a bedroom)and turning that portion into my library, instead of a inwall tank.. it will be skimmed to match colors. I may go with a piano hinge on the columns as well.. we will see.. future tank build is getting big at this point.. I don't think this will be up and running until we have been in the house for a year.. at least that is what I think the time frame will be.

We have an open floorplan type of living room with an inset front door. Vaulted ceilings. This idea would work to hide electrical needs for me to create a foyer. Hmm. Peer pressure. Lol

Are you thinking sleek and contemporary? Or classic trim?

classic trim.. Hopefully will be able to order the skins from a cabinet maker and attach. we will see. Hopefully the room will give off a 1930/40's smoking room vibe.. we will see. I have rather eclectic taste so it may turn into Victorian style knick nack heaven meets the next episode of horders..

I think I would plan to do something other than hang on overflows. Personally, I will never again have a hang on overflow. I will drill and go through the tank instead.
completely get it.. when the time comes for the tank buy.. it will come down to what is available or whether I have saved enough funds to special order the exact tank I want. I'm going to get all the pieces in place and then purchase the tank.

Thinking of your swank room brought me to another question. Anyone know if you could use red LEDs for moonlighting?

red will allow you to see in the tank without disturbing your fish but wont give the right spectrum for moonlight.

So not harmful? Just more of a lights out effect for the tank?

I used to cover a flashlight with red cellophane to look in the tank.. I don't think it bothers anything but I didn't do it long term.
