A couple more pix from the same event. First pic is about 5 months. Second at about 4-5 weeks. We ended up with 16 out of that batch that were grown out for sale. IMG_1324.jpeg IMG_1321.jpeg

They do spawn but it is extremely rare.
I wouldn't say extremely rare as I have had two separate torches spawn in two separate tanks in the last 3 years. Here's one of the babies. I also had my dendros spawn as recently as late last year. Vid attached for proof lol.

Do you have any vids or pics of the spawned dendros?
I used to have a 90g nps tank that was full of sun corals dendros and 3 rhizos the suncorals and dendros grew really well for me and I was able to frag them quite a lot but never saw a spawn or evidence of one. Not saying it cant or didnt happen and may have well happened in my tank but maybe flow was too much and the spawn was washed away?

There's a coral propogation company here in Aus that captive spawns torches and goni plus a stack of other types.
Had a few local reefers have it happen to them also, but it does seem to be rare to happen in a hobbyist tank.

Unfortunately, shortly after the dendros spawned, I had to take down that tank so I never got to see any babies from that spawning event. Fortunately, this same dendro community just spawned again in the new tank that I placed them in, approximately three weeks ago so I'm hopeful that there might be babies in the future.

I also forgot to say I was waiting for that shrimp to use the dendros as vending machines. He showed good restraint.

Very cool.

Still so rare that a lot of people in the hobby don’t even know this is possible but probably more common than I realize :)

These events seem to occur in September. Ours did the same.

This is interesting. Both in September, I wonder what the correlation is if any?

Did either of you notice any changes in the tank at the time? Like maybe ph increase from windows being open in the house because its cooler outside? I know one of you is in Texas and I am guessing the other is Cali, I dont know if september is open window season for you guys or not. Or if that even matters in either case? We have so many ways to keep our tanks stable or change a parameter basically at a whim that I think we miss out on stuff like this because there is very little variation in our tanks unlike in nature. Our tanks are protected from things like gravitational influences, shortening or lengthening of the light from seasonal changes, Temp fluctuations from tides or seasons and so on, unless we do it ourselves which most of us dont because stability is the key to success.

I have bred fish for years. While some fish will breed no matter what (most african cichlids, clown fish) some fish wont breed without some kind of environmental change to trigger it. Some you need to cool the water for a couple weeks and then bring it up to temp again, others you let water conditions degrade a bit simulating a dry season then do a big water change to simulate the rainy season, among other things.

Maybe none of this matters and all you need is happy corals. I have watched a few videos on coral spawning some more scientific than others one thing in common is they dont tell you what they did to help it happen, either they dont know or are not telling.

Had a large spawning event in my system. Over 100+ babies of several different hybrid variants come out of it. I wrote an article for Reef Hobbyist Magazine that should be out this Fall. Hopefully it’ll be a good read for some looking to replicate the process in their systems.
