Well I am working on gathering all the pieces right now. I was going to start working on the sump when ai ran into a problem. My stand is not wide enough and I am also worried about its structural support. The inside area is only 10" flat wide. Which means I can't even fit a 10 gallon much less a 20 gallon. I was thinking of putting a floor in it to give me more room but then I realized the door is probably way to small for sump support.

Do you think I am better off building a new one? I didn't build the this one it was given to me. The other factor is this stand was built out of 1x4s.

I agree on making a new stand. A 55 is kinda narrow, width wise, and when it gets filled with water it can be a little unstable.

I have spent the week working on this 55 gal stand. This will be in the family room so it has to be good looking and not a eye sore. I have thought about doing University of Tennessee logo on it above the doors on the black. It has black sand with black back. T5 powered

I built this stand for a friend for around $80, $110 with the hood. It was build to the diminsions of the tank and has an open back and top. The stand currently holds a 20 gallon sump and has room to spare.

Agreed. I finally have a day off tomorrow so I think I will start on it. I totaled my car on Wed.so most of my spare time this week has been messing with insurance and finding a new car.

Narrowness of the stand/tank is an inherent problem with a 55g and a reason why I never recommend them for reef tanks. If you're going to redo the stand to accomodate a sump then that's fantastic. Great idea.

Ya part of me is just thinking I should try to scrounge up a 75 gallon since I have enough rock for one.

I'm just fine. Let me know what you're gonna do regardless of what size tank you decide on and we'll put some holes in it!
