I have a basement sump and no check valve and my sump doesn't overflow. But then again I have a standby generator and it usually kicks on within 10-15 seconds. I am going to get a UPS for the return someday so it won't drain at all :)

I know, but he was in that post tank glow. :)
You cannot rain on this parade! Not today, not tomorrow, next week though I'm sure it'll be pouring!!

I just dislike them because they are prone to failure.....;Yuck;Yuck

Check valves are the least reliable piece of aquarium equipment in my opinion. I basically stopped using them years ago on freshwater tanks because they served zero purpose since they always failed. I will note I never tried an expensive one.

I spent the first 20 years of my career doing maintenance and installing equipment on ships and factories.

The top pieces of equipment failure are regulators and check valves.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a cheap one or an expensive one. Crap builds up and the flapper fails. It’s only a matter of time.

I personally will never use one in my tank.

However, if I did, I would be sure to clean and inspect it every 6 months and replace it every 2 years as a precaution.

Nah, I’m not going to pull it. Will be watching it though.

I would recommend testing it once a month [emoji846][emoji846][emoji846]

I can confirm from my 10 years of power plant operations experience, that you do not trust a check valve to hold. They are great when they do, and serve a purpose on duplex pumps so one just doesn't pump backwards thru the other, or so everything you just pumped out doesn't come pouring back in... but they are not a safety equipment. Gate valves are. (those leak too, dang river water)

I have a clear 1" check valve identical to yours, and I would have used it if my sump wasn't so tall. No room for my ball valve and the check valve. I haven't used the ball valve. At all... but I might, one day. Just maybe. If I ever install the mini manifold then it might get used.

@Scurvy, being clear will be both advantageous and a royal PITA... Make absolute certain that any refugium light you have does not shine on that check valve.

no more rain...

YAAAAAY!!! It's running! When do we add salt and bacteria, or whatever cycle we are doing?
Turtle has ESP! We added salt on Tuesday getting up 1.025 and had let it run a couple days. We also pulled some rock and pond matrix out of the sump of the 40B and dropped it in with two 4oz bottles of Fritz Turbo Start and some Ammonia last night. So away we go! Will watch ammonia but will probably move a fish or two over this weekend. Seems rushed I know but I kind of want my place back. Holding tanks and tubs running everywhere gets old quick!

Mostly a wasted weekend on the new tank. Busy doing water changes on the holding tanks and getting our biocube back in order. Boy I can't wait to get things back to basics with just two tanks.

I did get the lid complete here. Came out okay but I may eventually get something made.

Looks nice. With the old rock and pond matrix you should be good to go. I never noticed an ammonia cycle in my tank using old rock in the sump with the Caribsea rock. That stuff is supposed to have bacteria spores on it that become active when wet.

Anyway, let's get some wrasse in there already!!!

(I'm such an enabler)

Yep, I need to start catching fish in other tanks! It’s ready. Wound up at the Patriots game last night so nothing good accomplished yesterday.
Maybe you can explain this. I saw Tom Brady's coat on TV...it looked like an inflatable jump house.
