I was listening to a discussion about this the other day that was interesting. What happened to the movie star? Why aren’t there any new Tom Cruises? Well, the leading theory, in my opinion, is that there isn’t the consolidation of media anymore. Go back 20, 30, 40 years and you basically had tv, radio, print, and movies. For instance, if you had a hit song then it was hammered out everywhere on the radio, at bars, etc. The consolidated media was more focused and everyone had less options, so everyone’s attention was honed in on a particular song or movie, so the artists had their work amplified. However, in a post internet world, there’s exponentially more competition and content. Yes, this will allow a new artist to get more exposure than they would have historically had, which is good for them, but because everyone’s attention is spread thinner, you’re not going to get The Beetles or huge movie stars like a Tom Cruise. YouTube hit movies in particular because if you’re bored then you can just pop on a video on your phone. In 93, if you were bored, you’d go see a movie. TV is notorious for reruns which you get tired of, so running down to the local cinema was a great option.Imagine if this led to fresh faces and new actors and we didn't have to have Fast and Furious 45 and 80 year old actors revisiting long retired franchises. What a world right? Can anyone even name the last fresh face Hollywood found?
