I'm so sad! Just got home from work... And our large @SBB Corals indo gold from last sale. Looks like it's done for!? It was completely extended and fine last night am this morning before I left. Came back to it looking like this?! Any ideas? All other corals seem to be completely fine still...

Also a couple of pictures of the pumpkin patch mushroom I got a couple of weeks ago. It's liking it's new spot. Probably 2.5" across!

I guess we all need a second hobby besides reefing. I keep orchids and grow maples.
So I’ve heard that successfully keep orchids is challenging, but is it similar to reefing in so far as it seems more intimidating than it actually is?

Oh yes. I keep these in my kitchen window . Catteleya needs more sun
Wow! Nice collection. I used to have hundreds of different ones, but gave most away because I was moving too much. I’ve got about 8 left that are my favorites. This one is the prize. It’s a Catasetinae from SVO. I was the first to ever bloom it so Fred let me name it. Kelly is my daughter. She keeps a bunch of them and I do too so she never loses it. It’s almost pure black. We’re talking serious Dad points.

That's what's so confusing to me. It all looks good. Doesn't look like bjd, had some white slimy stuff coming out of it. But most have retracted into the skeleton, and I can see tips/tentacles that have fallen off around the tank. No idea what happened in the 8 hours I was gone :(

I'm no torch expert, but a Kung Fu dip or potassium salt dip...maybe

maples are NOT indoor. They need cold winter period for dormancy or they die
I’m having that problem now since I moved to central Florida. I have 4 Japanese Maple bonsai‘s left. The others couldn’t handle the heat. I may have to do the refrigerator trick in the winter to give them their cold down time.

Totally. As long as you set yourself up for success. They are easy. Get a good bark mix and a pot that will drain well. Put them in a window where they will get good indirect sunlight and water once every week or 2. I haven’t killed a single one and that’s all I do. Fertilize every once in awhile. The other thing is, most people think they are dead when they aren’t flowering, most of them only flower once a year. I’ve got a couple that haven’t flowered in a year or 2 and then I have 2 that I’ve never seen without flowers. As soon as the flowers start dying a new spike has come up and started flowering. Easy plants in my opinion.

Indirect light and hunmdity. That's why they love my window near the kitchen sink. I have thenm in bark, but I'm experiemening with plating one of them in coconut coir. I cook rice everyday. I use the water I wash the rice with to water the orchids. They seem to like it.

Any new crabs that could be pestering it, like emerald crabs?

Also, There is also no instant gratification. It’s a patience game. With Cattleya you only get flowers once a year that last 2-3 weeks. You have to just appreciate the beauty of the plant itself.

I had seen an emerald on it last couple of evenings. But they've never messed with any others. So I'm not sure, here's another picture I just took. Definitely doesn't look good. Figuring I should just take it out at this point?

I'd move it to lower flow for now if you can. Kung Fu Coral dip if you have all the components, it's just a recipe of other things like Cipro and Chemiclean and a few more things.

That is amazing. Yeah those are some serious dad points. So that orchid isn’t available for me to buy anywhere online is it?

I think if you have seen the emerald crab on it, it might have damaged it while stealing food. Maybe some mysis landed on it and while the torch is trying to pull it in to its mouth, maybe the emerald is trying to pull the food out.

I have one emerald that is plucking the food out of the mouth of my bowerbanki and will be removed if I can catch it.
