In the fighter pilot world, when you finish mission top of training there is a naming party and the squadron picks your name. You have very little say so of what it’s going to be. Rhymes good, you did something stupid, or it’s just down right cool or funny. John Bates got “ Master” now known as Master Bates. Steve Cain got “Raisen“ now known as Raisen Cane. Of course there were always double secret call signs for squadron use only that wouldn’t be appropriate for most forums. They were pretty explicit.
