Straight Portland cement is usable but has to be cured to get the ph to stabilize. Lowe's sells a well lining cement (yellow bucket with green lettering) that is safe to use right away.

Great info! You learn something new everyday. I want to make some custom aquascape in the future but didn't want to use the foam or the Portland cement due to cure time. Thanks!

i don't remember the brand that i used, but it was from a tile and cement specialty store. it was a very fast-setting architectural cement - you have about 5 minutes to work with per batch...mix up small amounts at a time - that also needed no cure time.
