I sent a sample into saltwater aquarium. com
Using their spot check test. First time I’ve done it. Figure if I have some high end pieces now i better watch my parameters
I didn't even know they did that. They don't test anything you can't easily test for, so why send in a sample. Just to check that your test kits are accurate?

Exactly I don’t plan on doing this more than 4 times per year

I need to do this too.
Tested the 55 yesterday, about to do the 110. I have some higher end stuff in those 2 now, also.

I use Chaeto but have to overfeed to keep it from bottoming out. Skimmers work but be ready to keep it on a timer if you start seeing it drop out.

Chaeto and other algaes consumes a LOT of trace elements to grow.... one step forward, two steps backwards IMO

Yeah. I didn't necessarily want Chaeto but my wife insisted!

I had high nitrates on my last water test. What do you guys do to reduce nitrate?
I test nitrates weekly and have noticed them creeping up slowly. I’m not quite as high as your situation. Mine were just under 9 at it’s highest. I try to keep it between 5 and 7. I rely primarily on automatic daily water changes but since the nitrates have started increasing, I’ve been doing 10% biweekly water changes manually. It is slowly been bringing it back to my 5-7 target.

I also have a felt roller which is a game changer. I’m admittedly bad with over feeding!

Not sure if I missed anyone that suggested it already or you’re already doing it, but wet skimming could help you out too.
