The Reef Institute. I really hadn't known that reefs had much of an impact on us. I also didn't know Florida had a reef like they described!

I just learned about the underwater sculpture gardens off the coast of Florida to raise awareness about coral reefsNovember 9 - Check out our Reef Conservation Partners and tell us one thing you learn! (Btw, if you've got a favorite conservation organization you think we should partner with, let us know HERE!
I don’t have exact figures on this, but the vast, vast majority of the O2 produced by the ocean comes from phytoplankton. Coral reefs make up such a small percentage of the oceans that it’s hard to imagine the O2 produced by photosynthetic corals being more than a couple percent of that 50-80%. That factoid seemed really bizarre to me and somewhat misleading. There are countless reasons to care about the decline of reefs, the O2 the produce isn’t one of them (or at least it’s near the bottom of the list, which is why it’s weird that they led with that).I NEVER knew this!
“Scientists estimate that 50 -80% of all of the oxygen we breath comes from photosynthetic algae in the ocean. Much of this is produced specifically by the zooxanthellae algae living in the tissues of coral. No matter where you live in the world coral, affects your livelihood.”
That’s super cool that coral (one of my favorite creatures on the planet) has such a huge impact to the livelihood of the human population. I think if more of this news got out there, then maybe people wouldn’t be so quick to destroy coral reefs.
