November 9 - Check out our Reef Conservation Partners and tell us one thing you learn! (Btw, if you've got a favorite conservation organization you think we should partner with, let us know HERE!
I NEVER knew this!

“Scientists estimate that 50 -80% of all of the oxygen we breath comes from photosynthetic algae in the ocean. Much of this is produced specifically by the zooxanthellae algae living in the tissues of coral. No matter where you live in the world coral, affects your livelihood.”

That’s super cool that coral (one of my favorite creatures on the planet) has such a huge impact to the livelihood of the human population. I think if more of this news got out there, then maybe people wouldn’t be so quick to destroy coral reefs.

I like the arrival about the red tide and oyster filtering, I live on the Chesapeake Bay and I think they need to take more initiative to add more oyster beds everywhere.

November 9, I learned that as a hobbyist group, we don't partner with a lot of conservation groups. I honestly expected there to be a larger amount than just two.

11/9 entry

I have often thought the traditional casket and funeral is strange. I really like the idea of an ocean memorial and didn't know it was an option. It is something I hadn't thought about and think it is cool what ORA is doing to not only provide structure for ocean life, but memorialize loved ones.

Bonus entry - Nov 9th - it’s very cool that Ocean Rescue Alliance uses “art” in their underwater restoration work

11/9 Entry: I've seen undersea sculptures but wasn't aware of ORA's reef modules and the ability to donate and have a memorial plaque. Maybe I missed something but I feel like they are missing an opportunity by not producing miniature modules for reef tanks.

11/9:

I learned that one of Ocean Rescue Alliance's goals is to "have 1000 reefs along the Florida coast to help create fish habitat and support coastal restoration". Very cool! :)

The Coral Restoration Foundation and Biota are some other good ones. It's pretty neat to see some of the "coral forests" they've created in Florida and the different techniques each organization uses to try and regrow coral. I had to throw in Biota since that's where I recently got my baby blue mandarins.

Nov 9th entry.

Wow, I watched several of the news clips, and I love them and the work they do.

Definitely like the idea of stopping algea blooms with natural filter feeders, and mangroves.

Also love that they use art in Florida with the mermaid reef.

Nov 9th Entry: I never knew about the underwater sculpture gardens in Florida. It is amazing and something I wish was advertised more for ecological awareness for coral reef conservation world wide.

11/9 - I learned Tampa was using oysters & mangroves to clean up the rivers before they get to the ocean. & that each oyster can filter up to 50 gallons a day.

I just learned about the underwater sculpture gardens off the coast of Florida to raise awareness about coral reefs. 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project, this may be something to check out if you live in Florida.

I learned about the 1000 mermaids artificial reef building project. Pretty cool. I might have to dive them sometime!
