Well I found two m58, and two m59, and one m153 locally.
I've heard ballast do not last forever. How long do magnetic ones typically last?
What would be a good term to search for (non aqaurium) m80?

Advance #71A5880 HX-HPF Autotransformer" 250w M80 HQI lamp

point is its best to try to find actual stock numbers for a search.

After mining the thread I posted above found these 600k m80 driven 250w bulbs..
Not sure exactly what the Radium bulbs listed is about though.
Radium HRI-T 250W/D
Looks to be about 5500k-ish. E40 base Ballast ??

Still like it better than todays lighting… it’s funny that the majority of people who have tanks is led but when they see a halide tank they’re blown away! I can see how this hobby shifted so easily cause people don’t stay long it’s crazy how fast the turn around is here in reefing.. I am the only halide lit tank in Vegas that I’m aware of and when this new gen of reefers come over to get a frag and see my tank they’re blown away! The fish look better, the shimmer is insane, acros look healthier with thicker flesh and in my opinion better growth patterns “most likely due to better coverage” and just makes for a healthier looking tank all the way around if you ask me.. a few have actually left my house looking to switch over to halides after seeing a tank with them.. it’s old technology with out a doubt it’s sad many generations of reefers never got to experience them.

You are so right...I'm thinking that even today ,there is no true competition from LED companies to MH in terms of growth patterns ,growth rate ,shimmer , overall health of corals and fish (well ,there is one company, Reefi that really grab my attention but I'm thinking they are the only company that really gives good results) .
heck , I'm even not using MH , I'm using 10×54w ATI power module T5 with 5 full spectrum bulbs, and I really love the results ! I started all of this SPS as tiny frags 1.5 year ago.
Note : the radion that shown in the image is above the smaller LPS tank .

For those with older ballasts, the capacitors and starters can be sourced and replaced for most units. These are usually the components that fail. I replaced the capacitors on all of my Bluewave ballasts after one of them stopped working. There was a noticeable increase in output on all units after I did this.

I always ran halides and took a break.. I came back and bought into the hype of leds and lit my first tank with radions and I hated it! It left really bad taste in my mouth and I went right back to halides! My good friend has the reefi uno pros and I will say it’s an amazing led and I loved what I saw! If I ever made the switch back I would buy reefi as my first choice over any other led! I hope it never comes to that “they quit making halide bulbs” but that’s where I sit on the debate. T5’s are amazing but I was personally never a fan cause I love the shimmer but I would never knock them they are legit and grow some crazy acros and color them nicely without a doubt!

I'm running with the ATI power module 2 kessil 360x tuna blue.
the shimmer they provide is pretty good for this mission.

You can see here , I hanged them with DIY hoock, at 45 degree to water surface.
it's good solution for me and for my SPS

They’re def powerful I’ve ran t5 halide combos and they can wash out a halide easy haha! Currently I run reefbrite xho mapped out around my halides for a dusk to dawn effect. I love the color of my tank and the look.

Random MH question but thought about making my own lumenarc reflectors but can’t seem to source the cad file that used to be available via google. Sounds like it was something people used to do back in the day. If anyone has it and is willing to share it would be appreciated. Not sure if R2R would want it posted directly here (not sure if it’s still a patented design) but if you could pm me and I can give you an email address.
Thanks in advance.

Edit: Found info from a previous thread when I asked some time ago. Not the file but the dimensions. If anyone has the file it would certainly make it easier to print.

This months "tank of the month" run on radion xr15's × 10. WOW!
Look, I love halides, and ran them for many years, im 66.. I have always said that if you know what you are doing any quality light system will work.
Take a look at this thread. If it was a halide lit system it would look just as good, imo.
Run what you want its all good.
This is not a negative for halide coment. Its just an incredable. system.

That's my thought exactly. I know nothing about structure of ballast and anything that regards with electricity, but it's just simple coil wrap. In theory, we can calculate width and length of coil according to targeted wattage/voltage. In my case it would be M80.

Thank you for sharing your valuable insight! I want to dig in for more but I failed to find more information online. I do not even know what keywords I should be searching to find more about it.

Lamp Drive Frequency
Standard
Ballast Component Type
Standard

Do you know what "Standard" means in grow indrustries?
I cannot find any info if this is probe start/ pulse start, nor I cannot find it's frequency (60 hz???), and it does not state if it is indeed m58. It could be m138(?) or m153.

If you ordered correct ones, please share the photos of its specification with us.
I really appreciate your input!
Of course, Here is the info. This is the ballast that works great for both 250W 20k Reef Bright Bulbs and 250w 20k Radium bulbs (both bulbs I have on hand to test)
Label on Ballast S50 internals (In the Grow industry a magnetic ballast rated for high pressure sodium HPS bulbs are the ballast we want)
Again here is a link to this ballast $25

They Also have a 400w version of this ballast $69 and I might pick up 3 of those as well to keep on hand. here is that link

Below is the ballast not to get its the M58 and did not power these bulbs here is that link

Hopefully this helps :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Radium vs Reefbrite 20k 400w bulbs
It seems like not many people are running the Reefbrite bulbs. Is there a reason? They seem to have good customer service when there are issues. I am currently running 400w Radiums on my display tank. With the availability questions and increased cost of the Radiums, I was looking for a replacement. I picked up a few of the 20k 400w Reefbrite bulbs to try. The color is pretty comparable to my eye.
Does anybody have some hard data on these two bulb choices like a spectral graph, par output, heat production (the Radiums run hot)? How long will the Reefbrite bulbs run vs the Radiums?

Paul
