I just got this pulsing Xenia and is it dead

If it's wet - it's not dead.

You could dang near plant a lawn with that stuff.
Uhhh. It's been spreading around my neighborhood for a while.

It's not dead, it's just ticked off at being moved. A dead coral is a heap of slime. Give it plenty of nutrients, and it should bounce back.

Now, it is also, as you may have gathered from the jokes in this thread, a very invasive coral. It's lovely stuff, but it /will/ cover the entire piece of rockwork you place it on, and will often release bits of itself to pop up on any other rockwork. Best practice is to put it on its own rock in the sandbed, as otherwise you'll eventually have pulsing xenia literally covering all of your rockwork.
