Hi all,

My gyres keep blowing out the middle of my sandbed only in the front. I've changed settings, power, etc. to no avail.

I'm thinking about putting a rock in the middle to break this up. Would this work? Any other suggestions?

Edit: the light is an issue in working on with Neptune

You can adjust the direction of the flow. Put your hand in front of the gyre and feel the direction of the flow. I point mine upwards

If the issue is in the center of the display than it is due to collision. A couple things could help in this case such as, but not limited to,

  • Height - close to the water surface but don't pull in a vortex
  • Cage direction - middle to slight up angle of attack. Sheet of water moving, laminar
  • Power intensity - you will need to adjust this depending on objective. Depending on size of display may be able to hit opposite side.
  • Flow mode. Pulse, anti sync, delay. If center is feeling the pressure then you are having collision. Alternate the flow and increase the pulse. Left, right, etc. If you are running both or the interval is too short then you are colliding in the middle.
Unless I'm missing something, and it is possible, you have what appears to be a new or young display. Not many coral colonies, or large corals, to break up the flow. To combat this you will need to work on the flow of the gyres by power level and pulse. One on, one off, etc.

Thank you for this. My tank is a little over a year old. The coral we have is doing well and growing, we're just trying to take it slow. This sounds like we should buy more though :p.

I am doing the built-in LPS mode with reduced power, but I can work on moving them up and eliminating some of the pulse modes. I tried going fairly low, but it did not seem to help much.

Just to possibly justify getting a rock with a spicy lemon Acan, a hammer, and a monti, would a rock in that location help to break up the flow?

I have this issue in my tank as well. I’m thinking about getting some crushed coral or a bag of larger grained sand like reef flakes to put in that area.

Adding rock(s) or coral will break the flow, yes. There is also a chance that the collision could damage the coral. I know the answer is a bit vague so I apologize.

The one thing you can do if you haven't already is pull up a chair or bucket, grab the controller or open the app, and pick a setting. Have a helper and get them to blow some bubbles in front of the gyre using a turkey baster. You can also use dry food pellet in small portions. This will give you a visual.

I have a pair of gyres in my 210 mixed reef, 54 x 30 x 30, and have experienced some of the issues you noted. In my use case it came down to adjusting power level and alternating sides.
