Hello all, and happy Friday to all who celebrate! So I have 3 Pitho crabs which ar of course awesome, but I have had them for a couple months now and have seen the molt from one. Does anyone here know how often they might molt? I can not find anything about this species on the internet.

I don't know about pitho crabs specifically, but most marine crabs molt every few months to a year, depending on their age.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as the crabs are healthy and they have a source of iodine, you should be fine.

It's also possible they have molted, but it was quickly eaten up by a CUC memeber, if you have any, before you saw.

Thank you, yeah I have a lot of CUC! I just ask because one of my crabs is missing 1 of his claws on one side and 3 of his legs on the other :angry-face: I don’t know how it al happened but he seems fine, so I just want him to molt and get his limbs back:)

Hello. So I'm new to these crabs. I purchased 4, 2 at a time like a week apart. I saw a shell of 1 this morning, empty and I'm kinda confused . There is like no info on internet about these funny crabs. I kinda thought they'd.....molt? Not sure if you call it that for crabs lol. Do you have any info on them? I'd greatly appreciate any.

Hello, yeah I also found virtually nothing on them. I still have 2 of mine. Yes they do molt, though I am not sure how often. Once they molt they will hide for a couple days. I can tell you if their claws are both small they are male, but if they one abnormally large claw they are female. Other than that, I don’t know much. They are strictly algae eaters though so if you don’t have much algae, you will need to supplement their diet with nori. I just take a sheet of nori for fish and use a rubber band to secure it to a rock or shell of some sort. Something that you can remove and put back in.
