Home made sump. No light. Middle chamber has some rock in a large basket and outlet for skimmer pump. Seeded with Cryptic sponges and other weird things from Tyree. Last chamber is the return. Prob holds 60 gallons when in operational mode.

Overflow
-> Filter Socks
-> Skimmer
-> Rock rubble in baskets
-> Return Pump
-> Manifold
-> 1) To display
-> 2) To chiller returning to filter socks
-> 3) To remote ATS returning to filter socks
-> 4) To remote refugium returning to rock rubble

Works for me.

My sump has evolved over the years as I find what works for me. It is now two acrylic tanks glued together and two bulkheads to pass the water.

Tank one has a DIY manual fleece roller, protein skimmer with a venturi plumbed to the return pump, auto water change pump, auto top off float, and calcium/alkalinity rack.

Tank two has liver rock, two titanium heaters, Carbon/GFO reactor, return pump, and manifold.

i use a coarse floss pushed up against the walls. not only does it keep the macro contained better than the laser cut holes on the acrylic divider, it also keeps the light from spilling out and shining on cal rx and skimmer and growing algae anywhere else in the sump.
Great idea. Thanks
