Pedal Laceration - How does it work?

I noticed my rhodactis decide to take a walk today—moved over about an inch for reasons that are beyond me. I understand that sometimes when they move, they leave a tiny piece of their foot behind and that grows into a new shroom. But how tiny is tiny? Is the segment visible to the naked eye? How long does it take to grow into a recognizably rhodactish shape? And if the original spot wasn’t good enough for the mushroom to want to stay there, how will a baby do any better?

Question inspired by this wanderer, who maybe got mad about my emerald crab using it as a blanket?:

I don't think there is a complete answer to this - but if the mushroom looks good - in some weeks/months you may have a new one

Weeks! Months!! Love my tank but argh my need for instant gratification… this is torture LOL
Thats what owning a reef tank is..... BTW - new mushrooms can grow quite quickly. The bottom line is hopefully the 'old one that moved' - looks healthy. Watch the piece that is left
