Ozone question

Should I not be able to smell ozone at all? I added a Poseidon 200 to my tank the other day. I have it on it's lowest setting. I have a big ol' bag of Marineland activated carbon sitting on the top of my skimmer. I also laid a bag of Marineland activated carbon across the baffle in front of my return pump.

I can smell ozone almost as soon as I turn on the ozone generator. I have it set to only run an hour per night while I am sleeping, but testing during the day has me a little worried. I am under the impression that the carbon is supposed to prevent me from smelling ozone at all. I am concerned for the safety of my pets that may be in this part of the house while it is running.

One of the reasons I am running ozone if because the wife is complaining about the fish store smell when she is in my office where the big tank is. I thought maybe running some O3 through the water while we are sleeping would reduce the smell.

I am just worried about the safety concerns. Is it normal to smell the O3 when it is running?

If you have sufficient GAC on the air and water outlets from the skimmer or reaction chamber, you won’t smell it.

Personally, I love it...but no one here thankfully, complains. Husbands nose doesnt work, and the kids are clueless about smells

The skimmer is before the baffles to the return pump section. I laid a very large media bag of carbon across the top of the baffle sponge.

So I don't have it on the outlet of the skimmer, but I do have it before the tank.

How do people go about putting GAC on their skimmer outlet? do they sell attachments for that? I have a Red Sea Reefer DC Skimmer 900.

Please try and place it directly on the skimmer outlet. Randy most likely nailed it with his suggestion. Let us know how you make out.

lay the carbon over the outlet. Be sure there is no back pressure on the discharge because that will impact the skimmer function.

I have a bag of carbon draped over the air outlets. I was referring to the water outlets. Are you saying I should move the wet bag from the baffle to draped over the water outlet? I'll try that.

you should have carbon on both the air outlet of the skimmer as well as the discharge. If you are not treating both it is likely that is your issue

So are you saying something like a mess bag hanging from the skimmer water outlet??

My wife (who has a much keener nose) is telling me that she doesn't smell ozone. She thinks the "fish tank smell" is just more noticeable to me when "clean air" starts coming from the skimmer.

Though I am going to move the wet bag from the baffle to the skimmer water outlet.

She is likely smelling the affluent from the protein skimmer. Carbon bag over skimmer air exhaust

I've had a bag of GAC over the air outlet the entire time. Like a ton of it. I haven't tried to cover the water outlet yet. Maybe today I'll pull the skimmer out for a good cleaning and see if I can cover the water outlet with a bag of GAC.

I still haven't decided if what I'm smelling is actually O3 or if it's just that the "clean" air coming out that has reacted with the O3 smells different.
