Non-aggressive eel

I personally keep a 36" zebra (Gymnomuraena zebra) in my 8' 240 gallon, and it is a perfect fish. Doesn't bother anyone, completely ignores the damsels, dottyback, and hawkfish.

I also recently added a 22" white eye moray (Gymnothorax thyrsoideus) to the same system and so far, it has been the same. The previous owner had it with a variety of small fish for over 2 years and had zero fish disappear. Seems to primarily feed on octopus in the wild, mine happily eats squid, octopus, shrimp, and clam on the half shell, even eats jumbo mysis off the substrate if the fish don't get it before it hits the bottom. Also ignores any small fish, even gets driven out of the one rock pile periodically by the 3" neon dottyback. They usually top out at 18" or so in captivity, but can reach as long as 26".

You don't think that some day that fang tooth will turn?

Isn't the most non agresssive eel a dead eel?

Maybe buy a rubber one....

I had a snowflake fir a year. Non aggressive... blind as a bat. Could only see 3ins in front of itself. Most eel are extremely near sighted.

My snowflake was a world-renowned ESCAPE ARTIST..... even with every conceivable way out BLOCKED. They can get out with a 1/4" gap somewhere

Several times heard a "thump/splat" on the floor and knew it got out and hit the floor.

I think theyre more of a P.I.T.A. than what it is worth.

I'd never get another one.

I gave away mine for free thru Craigslist in a 5gal bucket

From what little I could find online from the experience of others, I'm thinking it won't. I do keep it well fed though. I target feed it 2-3x weekly, and it steals jumbo mysis and clam on the half shell just about every other day when I feed the rest of the fish.

I also have a white eye and he is very shy. I do have a jeweled and he will eat blennies and cleaner wrasse (anything shaped like a silverside Ive found) but he leaves my other fish alone!

So I have decided to get a Chainlink. There are a couple available. 9" sounds like a baby.

These SHOULDN'T eat my fish correct? I know nothing is guaranteed, but the pebbles don't look for fish. I have no problem replenishing my cuc. My puffer and tusk do a number on them.

I lost my Golden Dwarf Moray last night. I had him for over 8 years and I'm heartbroken over it. I would buy another one in a second, but they come from Hawaii so it's a no-go right now.

So I cannot have a tank without an eel, so what to do. I have a 220G fish only with lots of rock. I have a small Porcupine puffer, full grown foxface and tomini tang, juvenile harelquin tusk, antenatta lionfish, and 3 lyretail anthias. The anthias are the ones that I would be most concerned about. My GDM never bothered anyone.

What do you recommend that will have personality and most importantly won't eat my fish. I'm looking at a goldentail (Gymnothorax miliaris), zebra moray, chainlink moray, or a snowflake.

I'm leaning toward the goldentail. My GDM was 16" and the goldentail won't get much bigger. I also read that they are quite docile. I read that the zebra is as fish safe as you can get, but I don't know what to do with a 4-5' eel. The snowflake and chainlink are also good options, but I don't know much about them. I can get a small goldentail right now.

He's calming down a bit. I offered him some octopus. He nibbled at it but didn't take it. I didn't expect him to eat on day 1, but I should try.

Absolutely inappropriate tankmates for garden eels. Super shy fish, need a 6" deep sand bed. Mine are even afraid of my yellow head jawfish. Great tankmates for seahorses though!

I was panicking this morning because I couldn't find him, then I saw his little head poking out. I'm glad he settled down and found a spot. I'll get some squid today.
