Noisy sump

Hi guys,

I bought a secondhand reefer 250. The previous owner rebuild the sump. Now there is extra space for more water on te right side, very lovely. However, on the spot where the water goes down into the pre-existing sump section there's a lot of noise. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make it more silent?

Maybe replace the 90 degree elbow with a 45 instead?

Is the noise from the pipe or the filters socks.

I am pretty sure it's from the pipe.

I always have my pipe exit below the water to keep noise down. A cover for that area would help also.

Consider re-plumbing it so the majority of the overflow goes direct to the pre-sock chamber, and tee a valve from the overflow down pipe to the fuge. Then you can slow down the fuge to a trickle

The end of the pipe is under water, I can make it deeper if that would help. Thanks for the help!

I wil try to make the end go deeper in to the water maybe that wil help. If not, being able to slow down the stream is a good plan. Thank you verry much.

The water exiting that upper chamber is likely going airborn inside the elbow because of the sudden change in direction, then falling into the water below, again still inside the pipe. I suggest you angle the grey pipe slightly so the water can flow down the inside of the pipe instead of going off a cliff inside the elbow.

I don't feel you need the drain pipe any lower than an inch below the water level in the sump. The noise is most likely from air entering in the fuge drain.

Maybe an easy fix will be to put a 90 inside the fuge where the water exits - inside the bulkhead facing down.
With full flow it should flush out any air after each restart.

If you have a Whirlpool at the outlet from your high sump. You may need to cut a piece of pipe in half lengthwise. Place the half pipe in the top of the inlet, to break the Whirlpool. Also I recommend you pipe from the unused bulkhead and directly over to the lower sump, in case the filter sock pipe gets blocked, or restricted.
