Bought a 60x40x40 long aquarium and wanted to ugrade my old nano tank, a guy from a local store told me to lay out some bacteria media below my sandbed to remove nitrates and amonia.
Not sure if this is true as i have never heard of this method ever.

I would not put bio media inside the display tank. Sand bed need to be cleaned from time to time. Are you planning to have a sump? What are you planning on the set up? Fish, coral and types of filtration?

I plan on using a canister filter and a large hang on back filter, i cant really add a sump due to the rim of the new tank being too hard to remove, and im afraid to accidently cause a leak. The setup is gonna consist of a decent amount of live rock and live sand, and for fish i plan on just moving my clowns and my cardinal, and for corals i jusst have some easy soft corals in my old tank ill move, like zoas cloves, gsp mushrooms and a kenya tree, which are all generally healthy

For the setup you described. A canister filter should do the job. Place all your media in there. You are good to go. Additional HOB to polish your water with some carbon or GFO. Also provides water movements.
Good luck!
