Went out and got a Zoa colony. My LFS really hooked me up.

Alk 8.0
Cal 437
Ph 8.2
Temp 78
Phosphate .03

photo is day 2 after placement into tank. Still deciding on permanent placement. Seems happy as is. 7B80C6B0-2878-4E2D-9952-0BD6ABBA5C77.jpeg 70471D0E-E548-42EC-9A7F-D81F886E15BE.jpeg

So just an update on my maintenance schedule and my tricks and tips with this nano tank.
I just cleaned my protein skimmer for the first time and boy did I wait too long. Thing was caked at the opening and not even skimming. I also cleaned a media bag off (with pre mixed salt water. Not to temp but better than tap) here’s the trick I just came up with. There is a ton of crap in the return pump chamber of my sump. Turning everything off is not easy due to syphon needing to be broken and restarted (yuk). So I’ve devised a plan to place a filter sock in front of my return pipe in the DT and then stir up the sump a bunch. This should give me a decent cleaning without having to shut down or pollute the tank! Wooo! Solutions are there if you look!

Having a Dino outbreak currently. Parameters as follows

salinity 1.025
Cal 440
Phos .03
Alk 8-8.5 (swings about 10ppm every 3 days.) dosing reef carbonate every 3 days for 10ppm gain.
nitrates on api look near 0
Ph 8.4
Temp 78

current setup has a sump on alternating with the dt. The refuge I un has some slime floating (green, black, white) I collect about every 4 days (about a quarter sized ball) Skimmer cup is emptied about every 4 days as well.
25% water changes every 8 days.

should I be raising my nitrates?
Livestock consists of 100+ Zoa colony, 1 torch coral, 1 candy cane I added today , 1 cleaner shrimp, 2 clowns and a few cuc members.
Any help with lighting schedule on this system or Dino battling. I know about the blackout and hydrogen peroxide trick. Just wondering if I can do it with lighting schedule and perhaps dialing my skimmer back to allow more nutrients to stay in the system longer. #reefsquad #reefhelp

Kevin.

Kevin,
If you're for sure you have dinos:

Stop all water changes until your dinos are gone.

There's not a fix-all treatment (depends on species), and it's usually a long haul with dinos.

Use synthetic forms to hold up nitrates and phosphates, don't want extra food rotting in your reef.

Use Salifert or NYOS for testing nitrates.

The new Hanna ULR PPM phos checker for testing phosphates.

This product can be helpful as well

You could do a three-day blackout, but that's about it.

As a side note:
Dose daily to keep your alk stable.

Hey thanks for the response. I will order the nitrates products you suggested. I have the Hanna ulr currently but no Hanna for nitrates. I will also dose daily for the alk, which I had considered but didn’t implement yet. I’ll hold off on my water change this week and see how things go. I also changed to an orbit light recently and have seen a bit more growth on what I believe is dinos. Perhaps I’ll dial my light back as well for a few days. See how it goes.
Thanks for the info.
Cheers.

Kevin,

Pickup the Salifert nitrate test kit, while grabbing that synthetic B-Ionic nitrate booster and Algaebarn's OceanMagik

If your going dose that (1-10) hydrogen peroxide treatment keep an eye on your zoas

Good luck!

You rock thanks for the help. I’ll hold off on the hP dose until I see them on the rocks or glass. In sand only for the time being.
Kevin.
Here is a shot of the tank just 2 hours after sunset. Almost 100% recession of the mystery algae. Just notating the thread. Any ideas on ID or brown substance welcome.

Just doing some research it may be diatoms. Which I had gone through already but added more sand to the tank about a month ago. Perhaps I’m just dealing with that process again due to the addition of new sand. Will update in a week.

Update time!

here is a shot of the tank currently. Having an algae outbreak which I have been trying a non additive solution on which has been going a bit better.
Current parameters.
Alk 8.5
Cal 470
Phosphates (as of 20 mins ago) .16. I had a testing error for about a week and finally realized and got a high reading. Was readiing .03-.01 before error was corrected.
salinity 1.025 (Stable for 3 days) see below.
Temp 78.7
Ok so here’s some things that happened. I got a new light, my clown fish was hosted by my torch coral, the torch coral was ripped open by cleaner shrimp for a pice of shrimp, surrendered the cleaner shrimp, bought a candy cane, lost control of salinity and battling algae out break. Wow. That’s a lot when you write it all out. Here have been my solutions. Light was set low with minimal whites, skimmer was set to a lower skim level, have been dosing alk up and purple up daily @ .05ml each 20 mins apart end of day. Sump light set to only 9 hours now down from 14. Water change 50% which will be my last for at least 3 weeks (parameters willing). I have the beginning stages of coralline algae on a lot of surfaces but only a few spots have deep purple as of today. I also added some live coralline spores to the tank. Also regarding stupid moves. I realized my salinity was down at 1.020 due to another testing error. I added salt directly to the overflow box which then mixed in my sump (2.5 gal) before hitting the display. I did it slowly but I believe this was the reason for my algae outbreak. Silicates right? Anyways.
All animals seem to be thriving and just dealing with the reddish bacteria/algae or whatever. Any help from #reefsqaud on id for this would be cool. Or feedback on how I can maintain a more stable mixed reef nano. Cheers mates! And please forgive my ugly tank ahahah!

This is behavior just 2 days after the clown was holding the torches arms in his mouth and being somewhat aggressive with it. They are much happier now and the torch looks much better than after the shrimp got him.

My brown algae is all but gone today. My skimmer has a very dark skin now and sump is not as ugly. Started dosing kalkwasser in ato @ 3g / 5gal. Alk steady at 8.9 today.

Tried to add a video who knows if it will play. Everything going great since kalkwasser addition into ato. Snails more active and tank looks great. Brown algae gone and ready for that coralline to kick in. Cheers I’m off to Miami for a week! ✈️

Back from Miami and hot dang the tanks never looked better. Alk stable as an oak and top off water not even half way gone (since moving to a larger closed container). I take these moments and log them mentally as I progress through this first salt water tank. Starting small has given me a crash course but with dedication and attention to detail, it can be a beautiful end result. While this tank may not be as luxurious as others. It has given me the experience to move towards a large reef system. Thank you to all of you who have helped me through this and for those who don’t know you helped (as I read every comment on posts I’m researching).

Cheers Mates,

km
