Someone! Quick! Talk me into cutting open the silicone and doing this already!

IMG_20230406_081526434.jpg
Silicone? Why silicone?

Silicone is okay to attach the acrylic AOI compartment to the glass tank.

Not recommended for acrylic to acrylic at all.

I would use weld on 4 for that application over silicone every day of the week.

If you absolutely have to use silicone here, I would open up your tape margins to give more of a mating surface.

Well, partly because I've never used the weld on and I'm intimated. Silicone gives me working time. Because my brain is slow. Tenecor recommended using silicone on the instruction sheet. Now I'm second guessing myself. Dang you.

I had never used weld either until I built my frag tank. Super easy.

That's a sexy looking group there.

Ordering weld on now sets me back a week or more, soonest delivery on the 13th or so.

Since this is really just an AIO do you think I'll really have issues from using silicone? If it's because of the acrylic being smooth, would I get better adhesion if I scuffed up the smooth parts between the tape?

I wish I would have mentioned this before today, whoops.

Weld on is Super not intimidating at all. In Fact you already have everything set up to apply it.

It comes out of the bottle as a very thin liquid. You just run the metal spout against the seam of the pieces held together in their final orientation as you have them. The acetone flows into the joint, melts the plastics, quickly flashes off and the plastics harden back together as one. It's That hard and takes ~30 seconds to cure..

Tencor should freaking know better.... That is rediculous.

Agree with the Weldon. Silicone is plan C with acrylic!

Mid day sexy shot included. Acan was down to bone at one point.

Weldon 4 plan A
Weldon 16 plan B
Silicone plan C

Plan D pay someone to do it or try again with 16

Well done. Takes forever to be delivered, but I figured out a lot of smaller hardware stores carry it. Maybe call around?

The issue with silicone and acrylic is acrylic has no pores. Therefore there is nothing for silicone to attach to. All you get is a vacuum effect.

It Absolutely could last forever. The baffle could also come loose the first time you start filling it up and there is uneven pressure, or knock part of it with your hand pulling out filter material.. not worth it imho.

Building an AOI drop in is the same really as building out initial baffling for a sump.

Here is mine. Acrylic to Acrylic with WO4. Acrylic to glass with silicone.

I called a local glass shop, they have weld on 4 they could sell me today, but no applicators. can I use it without the fancy bottle applicator? Maybe a syringe from the farm store?

The applicator makes life easy...

I know you really want to get it done. Would it work. Probably. But nothing good happens fast in reefing...

I'd do it right :)

Hardware stores carry it as well. I've seen it at Walmart and Ace Hardware.

What sections do you normally find it in? I do have several Ace's, farm stores, a home Depot, and other hardware stores I could go looking at.

Hmm. It won't be as clean without the applicator but you could make it work I'm sure. A large guage needle and steady plunger thumb would be my first choice. It also takes very little of the liquid.

I know weld on isn't prime, but I think I have seen the applicator bottles prime eligible shipping.
